Nanuya Island, Yasawa Islands, Fiji

Our Thoughts on Nanuya Island Resort
Nanuya Island is located mid-way up the Yasawa Island chain when travelling from Nadi or Denarau.  It’s the island where Blue Lagoon Cruises have a fabulous private beach and where their 3 and 4 day cruises change over.  You’ve probably seen the photos of the wonderful beach with the cruise ship tied to a coconut palm in the background.  The “Blue Lagoon” beach is typical of Nanuya Lailai Island and it’s just around a sandy spit, about a kilometre away, where Nanuya Island Resort is located.

Nanuya Island Resort is a rare mid-range resort in this part of Fiji where the resorts tend to be at the high end of the range.  Nanuya Island Resort self-rates at between 3 and 4 Stars and we agree with that rating.  Their prices reflect the mid-range rating.  It’s a family business and staying there you soon get the feeling that you are part of the family and you will enjoy the personal service.

What you experience at Nanuya Island Resort is a good standard of accommodation and services, memorable meals at reasonable prices (Continental Breakfasts are included in the nightly tariff), a superb location and a deep feeling of well-being and contentment which comes from the beautiful surroundings and the laid-back, warm and friendly environment. The restaurant, lounge and bar are all grouped together in a large completely open-sided, thatched building on the flat land behind the beach.  It’s rather like a big Colonial-style veranda. The resort food is based around locally-harvested seafood which is always extremely fresh and there is always a good selection of other options on the menu too.  Dinner deserts are always a special treat.

There are only 17 Bures and Villas in the whole Resort so it’s never a problem getting a hammock or a shaded sun-lounger on the beach.  Snorkelling is great right off the beach.  Organised activities include access to a Scuba Dive Operation, Village Visit, School Visit, a snorkelling boat trip, handline fishing, access to Jetskis and perhaps the best excursion, the boat trip out to the “Blue Lagoon Caves” the Sawa-i-Lau caves which are handily located to Nanuya Island Resort. During the Mantaray Season (usually May through October), there is also the opportunity to swim with Mantarays.  Active people also enjoy the several walks available around and over the island as well as kayaking and swimming.

Best of all though is just relaxing with a good book on your veranda or in a hammock beside the sea.  Relax while you enjoy a quiet pre-dinner drink or two at the bar or on your veranda while you take in the sunset out over the Blue Lagoon around you, or take an early morning walk along the beach before breakfast just as the day gets underway. And remember, there is a super little Massage Hut on the hill where you receive Polynesian Massage accompanied by the amazing view.

Nanuya Island Resort is warm, quiet, relaxing, friendly and very good value for money.

Your Accommodation Options
There are four accommodation options at Nanuya Island Resort; Traditional Treetop Bures, Deluxe Villas, Superior Villas and their magnificent Luxury Villa.  All are quite different.  The Traditional Treetop Bures are located on the rise behind the beach and those that are lower on the rise have a filtered, leafy outlook to the Blue Lagoon and those higher up have a broader view of the lagoon and the surrounding islands.  As a rule of thumb, the higher the Bure number, the higher they are located on the hill. You often read reviews that state Bure numbers 11 or 12 have the best views, but remember, they are higher up so there is a longer path and a few more steps to reach them, although the paths up from the beach are neither steep nor onerous. Traditional Treetop Bures are certainly located amongst the trees; however, they are not built “in” the trees.  The back of each Bure, which houses the bathroom, is on ground level and the rest of the Bure is built on a platform out from there – the veranda balcony is on the front of the Bure and that may be between 1 and 3 metres above the ground level.  The outlook from the balcony is through and over the trees and in the Traditional Bures located lower down, sitting on your balcony surrounded by tropical trees and palms is a very pleasant place to be at any time of day.

The bigger Deluxe Villas and Superior Villas are located only steps from the beach and, although they are open-plan in style, the sleeping area is quite distinct from the living area. There is a beautiful view of the beach, the lagoon and the surrounding islands from the veranda of each Villa.

The Resort has a minimum 2-night stay policy. They don’t accept 1 night bookings and that’s fine with us as you really can’t begin to appreciate everything this great spot has to offer in only 24 hours.

Room Categories
Bullet Traditional Treetop Bures:
Quite compact in size at 20m2, but never-the-less very comfortable, the Traditional Treetop Bures feature a polished wooden floor and a high peaked ceiling. Nestled in the Tree Tops among tropical flora with breath-taking views over the blue lagoon, the Traditional Treetop Bures are a short stroll from the beach. These Bures are not air-conditioned and that isn’t a problem because they have excellent flow-through ventilation and a nice high ceiling with a ceiling fan to help the sea breezes to naturally keep the interior at a pleasant temperature. The bathroom is a feature with its ground-level courtyard-style natural stone-wall shower.  The “outdoor” shower, (unlike some in The Tropics), does have a roof which is an opaque material which lets in a lot of light and, in addition, there are high-up windows which also let in light. Of course, the shower is private but the windows and the opaque roof give a feeling of showering out in the jungle under the trees! The shower head is directly above, so if you don’t like getting your hair wet every time you shower it would pay to pack a shower cap.

The outdoor balcony features a stunning sunk-in spa bath.
Complimentary wifi is included for the duration of your stay in The Luxury Villa.
