MATAVA
“Fiji's Premier Eco-Adventure Resort”
Kadavu Island, Fiji

Our Thoughts on Matava
Matava caters for a maximum of 22 guests at any one time. They describe their Resort as “Fiji's Premier Eco-Adventure Resort”. They certainly have developed a very good eco quality Resort and there is little doubt that they also deliver on the eco-adventure promise as well.  While retaining their original eco resort credentials, they continue to move with the times, where once lighting was by hurricane lumps, they now provide solar electric power and solar-powered water heating in the bures.  In the central facility, there is electricity to charge battery-driven cameras, phones, tablets etc., (but not enough for hair dryers) so even though you are a fair distance “away from civilization” you are not completely cut off from all modern appliances. However, guests still dine by lamp-light and when there has been no sun, the electricity supply can be a little “patchy” to say the least butthat just adds to the ambience and overall enjoyment.

Apart from the relaxing, natural surroundings, a percentage of people staying at Matava are there for the incredible dive opportunities provided through their professional Dive operation on the nearby Great Astrolabe Reef.  The Astrolabe Reef is known world-over for the opportunity to experience rays and other large sea creatures as well as colourful live corals etc. Where Matava also scores highly is in the activities it offers to non-divers or divers on non-dive days. For utter relaxation, there is nothing better than staying at a good Dive Resort when the majority of guests have gone diving for the day.  Virtually having the Resort to yourself means you can stretch out in the lovely lounge next to the Terrace Restaurant, read a book, enjoy a quiet lunch, have a wander along one of the many bush tracks, take a massage in the Bamboo Spa or enjoy one of the many eco-adventure activities on offer such as kayaking, sport fishing, surfing, snorkelling trekking, bird watching or popping over to nearby Waya Island for a romantic picnic on a beach where the only footprints you see in the sand are probably yours!  At Matava, all meals, unlimited tea/coffee, free use of kayaks and snorkelling on house reef and free snorkel gear use are all included in the nightly tariff.

You really need to spend at least 5 nights at Matava to get the full benefit of a stay here.  The Resort owners don’t recommend stays of less than 3 nights. To that end, Matava offers a series of specific packages of 3 and 5 night durations catering to guests with particular interests, which offer excellent value for money. If you stay 7 nights you will experience the once-weekly lovo night where the people from the local village come in to entertain with their totally authentic Fijian dancing, singing, kava ceremony etc.  It’s wonderfully authentic and natural and non-touristy.

What Matava Say About Themselves:
“Fiji ….. Untouched”

“Find your spirit of adventure as you experience the magnificent beauty of a remote unspoilt tropical Fijian Island. Plunging volcanic rainforest slopes meet azure coral lagoons and the Great Astrolabe Barrier Reef, a rare untouched slice of nature unfolds before your eyes.

No roads, no noise, no stress. Traditional thatched Fijian Bures hug the jungle fringes. Private sun decks gaze over turquoise lagoons. Solar powered lighting, solar hot water and no carbon footprint.

Dive the world renowned Great Astrolabe Barrier Reef in style from the 31ft custom built Dive Me. Indulge in valet diving from our on-site award winning PADI 5 Star Dive Centre.

Catch dinner from the multiple World Record holding 31ft fly-bridge game-fishing boat Bite Me.

Snorkel marine reserves, explore jungle trails, kayak mangrove bays, experience the real Fijian culture, picnic deserted beaches or just pamper yourself in the Spa.

Relax in the splendour of your private en-suit bure as you contemplate the stunning sunset and anticipate the, grown right before your very eyes and served by lantern light on the ocean terrace.

Far from the madding crowd, unplug and recharge at Matava, Fiji’s Premier Eco-Adventure Resort.

Sit for a while on your private secluded bure sundeck and rest your gaze on the sparkling South Pacific Ocean as it laps the spectacular Great Astrolabe Reef and turquoise coral lagoons spread before your eyes. The bures and their private decks are all carefully positioned for absolute privacy, so you can’t even see your neighbours.  What better place to sip a pre-dinner cocktail and contemplate the sunset.

Dining at Matava is truly an experience where we will try to impress you with our latest and greatest creations using the organic produce from our garden. Every day fresh food and produce is brought from the organic garden and the kitchen goes to work making sauces from scratch, hand rolling pasta, presenting only the best cuts of meat and the freshest of seafood.

The entire experience is carried out with your fellow guests sparking conversations from kindred spirits under the Milky Way in all its glorious wonder (of course we sneak inside if the weather is not cooperating). Savour delectable entrees such as freshly caught yellow fin tuna sashimi, Fiji’s famous dish Kokoda or perhaps our spectacular Thai fish soup. Then, be tempted with a beautifully cooked piece of Coral Trout, lightly seared in a tomato and chilli sauce and freshly picked organic garden salad. For desert, a tropical fruit and meringue with whipped cream or perhaps a slice of cheese cake just made from freshly picked lemons.

Every day is a surprise of consistently outstanding gourmet dining.”

Your Accommodation Options
The bures at Matava are a work of art.  From the outside, they look exactly like the real thing and they are very true in design and feel to the bures you see when you visit a remote Fijian village.  The wall cladding is woven from natural panels which overlap much in the way that more modern timber weatherboards overlap to keep the rain out.  Roofs are thickly thatched.  Inside the bures, while retaining a certain amount of rustic charm, they are very comfortable with beautiful natural polished Fijian Mahogany floors, large louvered windows to aid natural cooling and expansive full length picture windows opening onto your private deck with ocean views. All bures have private ensuite bathroom facilities.  Bathrooms have a ceramic tiled floor and good quality fittings. Solar power provides night lighting for night time reading and comfort. Hot water is supplied to all the bures by an eco-friendly Solar Hot Water system.

Bures are spacious with plenty of room for the four-poster bed (with mosquito net) as well as lounge furniture.  The decks flow almost seamlessly from the bure interior.

All meals, including breakfast, lunch and dinner plus unlimited tea/coffee are included in our nightly room tariff.

Room Categories (In ascending order of tariff)
Bullet Oceanview Bures:
The Oceanview Bures are generally closer to the restaurant and the waterfront and offer guests more immediate ocean views.
Maximum Occupancy: 3 guests
Existing Bedding: 1 Queen Bed
Additional Bedding: 1 Single Bed can be added for a third guest.

Bullet Honeymoon Bures:
A newer design than the Oceanview Bures while retaining a similar ambience. Honeymoon Bures are located higher up on the hill and offer superb views out over the tropical vegetation to the ocean and the reef. Honeymoon Bures have a more modern bathroom. There are approximately 90 stairs up to the highest Honeymoon Bure – that can take a bit of effort, (especially after a big dinner), but during the day you can guarantee the view from up there is nothing short of breath-taking. On a clear night, due to the absence of unnatural light, the sky above is a blaze of stars.
Maximum Occupancy: 2 guests
Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed
Additional Bedding: No additional bedding accommodated.

Getting To and From Matava
Transfers to and from Matava are part of the fun adventure!
The Fiji Domestic Airline “Fiji Link” has scheduled return flights between Nadi and Kadavu’s Vunisea Airport on most days. The normal flight time is 40-minutes and the aircraft is usually a Twin Otter turbo-prop. A return service is also flown between Suva and Vunisea once a week, usually on a Monday.

Matava’s guests are met at Vunisea and taken by road a short distance to a sheltered bay beach where they join the Resort Transfer Boat for the 45 to 60-minute ride to Matava. Depending on the tide, guests may need to wade out in ankle-deep water to the boat. The entire boat transit is taken within the sheltering reef and is very scenic.

Depending on the number of people in your travelling party, it may be more convenient to take a charter aircraft or floatplane transfer and Our Specialists are happy work out the best options for your particular arrival and departure schedule.

Kids’ Policy
Due to its remoteness, Matava is not particularly child friendly. The Bure decks are not fenced so young children may find the decks challenging.  Only one additional bed can be placed in the Ocean View Bures and none in the Honeymoon Bures.  While the resort chefs do their best to accommodate special dietary needs, a child menu is not normally available. A child of any age is charged as an adult.

Quoting Matava on Bookings Including Children
“Matava does not automatically accept bookings for children. Due to our remote location, limited power, no television / internet and our restaurant policies, the resort may not be suitable for all children. Bookings for families should be discussed with us on an individual basis. Matava does not automatically allow junior divers to dive.”

Check-in/Check-out
Check in/ Check out times will vary in accordance to the time of flight connections at Vunisea Airport

Quote from Matava re Cancellation Policy
“Unused portions of the diving, fishing, food or accommodation packages not taken by the customer’s choice or diving and fishing cancelled as a result of inclement weather and or acts of God are non-transferable and non-refundable. Matava will try to accommodate changes to diving and fishing schedules due to inclement weather and or acts of God. Multiple dives (2 tank, 8 tank, 10 tank etc. must be taken in multiples of 2 on each boat trip – generally 2 tanks per day). Dives cannot be split, taken singly or transferred to other persons.

No refunds will be given where a guest fails to complete a dive, dive course or fails to participate in pre-booked activities because of ill health or diving safety reasons. An example of this would be (but is not limited to) “I couldn’t get down because I couldn’t equalize”. No refunds will be given where a guest fails to use accommodation, food or any activity such as fishing or diving services included in a package, simply because he or she chose not to use said services. Examples of such free-choice decisions not to use paid-for services include but are not limited to, "I was too tired;" or "I changed my mind after arriving."”
