Atuona Bay, Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia

Our Thoughts on Hiva Oa Pearl Lodge
If you have dreamed of a modern bungalow high on a warm tropical ridge ringed with gardens, with a deck overlooking a romantic harbour backed by a distant misty mountain and one of the most natural environments on Earth, this place will blow you away. Get there quickly before the rest of the world catches on that such a place exists!

Everything about the location of Hiva Oa Pearl Lodge is superb.  The tropical gardens surrounding the little resort are colourful and lush, the drive in from the airport is pleasant and welcoming, the little village down below is picturesque, but it’s the outlook from the Lodge that makes this place – it’s nothing short of breath-taking.

The Lodge fits in well with its environment with its pretty Marquesan influences to complement its modern facilities.  The cosy, welcoming restaurant, bar and reception lounge face the view over a delightful little horizon swimming pool. The accommodation bungalows fan out from one side of the central facility and are generally slightly below the level of the restaurant/pool complex. The staff do wonders in the kitchen for a place so far off-the-beaten-track and the managers go out of their way to ensure you have a perfect break right from the moment you are picked up at the airport.

This is a great spot for relaxing, but there is also plenty of interest on Hiva Oa to keep you as busy as you wish to be.  As with Nuku Hiva, there are a variety of ancient archaeological sites which are well worth a visit.  The black-sand beaches on the northern side of this island are pretty and usually deserted.   Hiva Oa is variously known as “Paul Gauguin’s Island” and “The Garden of The Marquesas”.  There is a Paul Gauguin museum in Atuona and his grave is located in the valley behind the village.  The cathedral; the tohua Pepeu, which hosts dance performances for the Marquesas Festivals is certainly worth seeing as are the rock carvings in the valleys.  Hiva Oa is well known for its word carving craftsmen, so this a great place to pick up a genuine hand-carved souvenir.

As we travel around The Pacific, we have come to realise that one reliable measure of how good a place is may be made from observing the number of cruising yachts which visit and stay.  The harbour at Atuona below Hiva Oa Pearl Lodge is often bustling with yachts which have arrived from all over the world.  Cruising yachties know a great place when they find one. Hiva Oa isn’t the easiest or closest South Pacific Island to New Zealand, but it is so worth the effort to get there and Hiva Oa Pearl Lodge is a terrific place to stay.

What Hanakee Lodge Say About Themselves:
“Perched on a ridge above the eastern side of Tahauku Harbor, the Hiva Oa Pearl Lodge offers amazing panoramic views of the island`s wild beauty. On the clearest day, you can see Mount Temetiu, the Bordelais Canal, the small island of Hanakee, the distant volcanic island of Tahuata, and the village of Atuona where Paul Gauguin and poet Jacques Brel are buried.

True to the spirit of the Marquesas Islands, each room at the Hiva Oa Pearl Lodge is decorated with creative Polynesian accents from talented local artisans. The prominent tiki statue in the lobby and other carvings throughout the complex serve as a constant reminder to the cultural significance of your surroundings. This hotel also features a restaurant with an outdoor terrace and infinity pool. There are a number of activities and excursions available, making it easy to explore the island and discover the ancient history of this remote region.

Your Accommodation Options
There are only 14 bungalows at Hiva Oa Pearl Lodge; all offer the same facilities and are of the same standard and layout, the (only small) difference in tariff between the categories is for the outlook offered.  Mountain View Bungalows tend to face to the east over Atuona Bay and Atuona Village towards the high interior mountains of Hiva Oa.  Ocean View Bungalows face more to the south-east with a view of the bay to the right with the mountains in the distance as well as a view of the harbour with the boats at anchor and the open sea off to the left.  Premium Ocean View Bungalows have the widest, uninterrupted views of the ocean, the bay and the mountains.

Getting To and From Hiva Oa Pearl Lodge
Air Tahiti services Hiva Oa Airport with daily flights on modern ATR aircraft to and from Papeete.  Flight time varies from 2 hours 50 minutes to 3 hours 50 minutes. Hiva Oa Airport is located in a valley in the centre of the island and transfer time between The Lodge and Hiva Oa Airport is 15 minutes by resort vehice.
A private vehicle transfer is available as an alternative to the normal seat-in-vehicle arrangement.
Hiva Oa Pearl Lodge is perched on a hill overlooking Traitors Bay and Atuona Village.  It is a walk of around 40 minutes down to the village and this can be a bit wearying especially in the heat of the day.  The Lodge offers a complimentary seat-in-vehicle service to take guests over to the village and back.
