South Coast, Savaii, Samoa

"There is still a place where time forgot. Where the crowds haven’t yet reached, where the guidebooks haven’t ruined, where local children splash and play in a pristine lagoon lapping at golden sands just inside of an empty, funnelling right-hander. Indeed, on the lesser-known island of Savaii, a short ferry ride from Upolu, Western Samoa, a road leads to a lost corner of the earth called Aganoa. Here, at Aganoa, lies a surfer’s — and non-surfer’s — paradise. A consistent, world-class reef break peels into a channel just 50 yards in front of a restaurant perched at the sea. A gentle, idyllic lagoon lined with a picture-perfect beach hugs the verdant, manicured grounds in seemingly endless and fragrant bloom. Eight airy, newly-renovated and self-contained fales (bungalows) doze near the sea.

While primarily Aganoa caters to surfers (only 8 at a time) seeking its guaranteed uncrowded waves, Aganoa — like Savaii itself — is also the perfect place for the family. With an array of activities from kayaking, fishing, snorkeling and more, both on-site and island-wide, Aganoa is a stress-free destination without the exorbitant price tag that most camps of this calibre attach. Couple that with Samoa’s beautiful Polynesian culture and people — and you may never want to return home…With empty waves just outside your fale, in this private piece of Eden surrounding your companion or family, it’s not hard to see how — thankfully — time forgot about Aganoa. And moreover, how easy it is to forget about time.

OUR Thoughts on Aganoa Lodge Samoa
In 2014, the former surfing-centred and somewhat basic “Aganoa Beach Retreat” was completely transformed into what is now a terrific little resort-style property which perfectly combines its rustic traditional-Samoan past with new, more modern facilities and services without losing any of the charm of the superb location and the perfect, natural surroundings. While it continues to offer surfing as one of its primary activities, the new Aganoa Lodge Samoa is also a haven for non-surfers, couples, honeymooners and families.

The location is unsurpassed. On Savaii’s south coast only around 10kms from Salelologa town which is the port and entrance point for Savaii, Aganoa Lodge fronts a white-sand beach on a sandy cove between two points.  The reef is close to the land here and the surf breaks just off shore.

The work that has been done on the individual fales has produced a remarkable result.  The original stand-alone fales have each had a natural stone ensuite bathroom added, wooden slat fences have been provided for privacy and a large wooden deck has been added out front.  The interior of each fale has the same space as before, but has been upgraded and the former woven coconut fibre screens which were reminiscent of the beach-platform style local fales much favoured by the local population for weekend breaks have been replaced with striped canvas curtains, which, when closed, give the occupants the impression of being in a modern safari tent.

The nightly tariff is two-tiered – one rate for surfers and another for non-surfers.  The reason for this is that the surfers rate includes 2 daily surf/activities transfers to surfing spots around Savaii which non-surfers don’t need.  A maximum of 8 surfers per night are accommodated at Aganoa Lodge.
The nightly tariff for all guests includes:
  • Round trip ferry transfers from Upolu
  • Round trip transfers from the ferry wharf to the Lodge
  • All Meals
  • Daily Maid Service
  • Use of all equipment including:
  • Fishing Equipment
  • Snorkelling Gear
  • Stand-Up Paddle Boards
  • Soft-top Surf  Boards
  • Sea Kayaks
  • Bicycles
  • Ping Pong
  • Bocce (something like petanque)

Fales have electricity, safes and wifi is available (charged) throughout the property.

The “Main Lodge” is a modern building in keeping with its surroundings, perched right above the sand at one end of the beach.  This building houses the reception, a comfortable lounge, the restaurant and the bar.  Meals are superb with something of an emphasis (although not exclusively so) on super fresh seafood.  Vegetables are grown in the hydroponic garden at the Lodge.

On a recent visit to Aganoa Lodge OUR Specialists were very impressed with the melding together of traditional Samoan and contemporary architecture in such a unique way.  We loved the whole feeling of the place with its rustic charm, superb location, great food, entertainment and the number of surfing and non-surfing activities available there.  Olemoe Waterfall is 10 minutes inland, there is excellent fishing and snorkelling, Alofa‘anga Blowhole, one of Savaii’s many attractions is only 30 minutes away and there are tracks around nearby Mt Silisili by which to enjoy the untouched interior rainforests.

Aganoa Lodge is another special place on Samoa’s “other” island – Savaii.  A great destination for getting off the beaten track and enjoying everything nature provides in this remarkable country.

Your Accommodation Options
The 8 rustic fales (bungalows) are spaced out either along the beach frontage or a little back from the beach with lawn between the fale and the beach.  No matter which location, every fale provides guests with a panoramic view of the beach, the bay and the ocean. Facing south to maximise the cooling breezes, fales are open-sided to allow flow-through ventilation and also have high-speed fans.  Four of the fales have a King Bed which makes them ideal for singes or couples and the other 4 fales are equipped with a Queen Bed which leaves spaces for a Single Bed to be added for those travelling with a child.

Originally designed without an ensuite, all fales have been recently totally upgraded and now have an ensuite bathroom built from the natural lava rock which is plentiful on Savaii.  The vanity and toilet are located in the roofed portion of the ensuite and the shower is located off this are in an open-to-the-sky walled courtyard.

Aganoa Lodge also has a Beach House which is built in a more contemporary style.  The Beach House has detached bathroom facilities.

Getting to and from Aganoa Lodge Samoa
Aganoa Lodge staff meet guests in Upolu and guide them through the transfer from the airport or Upolu accommodation to the ferry between Mulifanua Wharf on Upolu and Salelologa on Savaii.  Round trip ferry and land transfers are included in the lodge tariff.

The Lodge provides complimentary hire bicycles for guests and these are a great way to get around.  A 2km ride over the point and along the bay on a single lane lava track brings you to the South Coast Road and a couple of pleasant little local villages.  Turn right on to the South Coast road and it’s a pleasant 9km-or-so ride into Salelologa town.
