COCONUTS BEACH CLUB RESORT & SPA Upolu, Samoa
“Coconuts is a truly unique resort, with distinctive design features, world-class facilities, and an incomparably relaxing environment. Built of local materials by Samoan craftsmen, the resort was planned to harmonize with its environmental and cultural surroundings, and offer guests the true flavor of Samoa. Coconuts is about an experience, not just a place to spend the night. There are many resort activities on offer, including village and island tours, scuba diving (by arrangement), surfing guides, yoga, snorkeling, kayaking, boating in traditional Samoan “paopao” outrigger canoes, and excursions into the adjacent mangrove estuary. For those who wish to simply relax, there are the beaches and the wonderful gecko shaped swimming pool, complete with swim-up bar. And the beachside restaurant and bar offers what several magazines and guidebooks agree is the best food on the island. But more important are the unexpected opportunities: a stroll through the village with a staff member, a cup of cocoa with a new friend in their traditional Samoan home without walls, spending time with the local villagers and learning about their fascinating culture – experiences you simply don’t get elsewhere. Coconuts offers everything you expect in a boutique resort – intimate scale, personalized service, full spa facilities – and all in a setting of white sand beaches and turquoise lagoons as beautiful as you can imagine."
Our Thoughts on Coconuts Beach Club Resort & Spa There is a very relaxed and a very Samoan feeling about this Resort with its 20 high quality individual fales and suites, great location on Upolu’s South Coast, an excellent beachside restaurant, spa and beautiful gecko-shaped pool with swim-up bar. Coconuts Beach Club has been extensively renewed in 2010 and 2011, and while most of the accommodation units and the resort facilities have been up-dated, the resort has successfully managed to retain the many pleasant Samoan characteristics for which it has been well known over the years.
The accommodation is a tasteful blend of traditional Samoan style with modern European comforts. There’s nothing “false” about the way the fales have been constructed with their natural high timber beam roofs and lava rock feature walls teamed up with lounge furniture and bed frames of natural bamboo. The ensuite bathroom showers are a replica of the many beautiful natural waterfalls found in the centre of Upolu. Guests really enjoy the sunken shower base and the waterfall-style shower cascading down from the natural rock wall.
Like many Samoan villages, Coconuts is built around the beach. There is a nice sloping beach access to the lagoon although the sand outside the Beach Fales and beside the restaurant and the pool area has been leveled behind a low natural rock wall which is great for the comfortable placement of beach sun-loungers. The swimming pool complex is right in the centre of the resort on the beach front. Facing the pool from the lagoon, Mika’s Restaurant is to the right and the accommodation is to the left, either on the beach front or positioned back a little from the pool.
Saturday - Samoan Cultural Day is another highlight and a chance to interact with the local villagers as well as the chance to participate in and learn about local food preparation and the many uses of the local produce. The day culminates in an enthusiastic fia fia night. It’s a most enjoyable day.
Snorkelling gear and the use of kayaks is complimentary for guests and here’s a good deal – the mini-bars in each room are replenished daily with complimentary beer, bottled water, house wine and soft drinks. Coconuts have a meal plan that we highly recommend and can only be purchased at the time you book your accommodation. The meal plan includes local beer, house wine and soft drinks at lunch and dinner. Coconuts is a great location for weddings and honeymoons and special packages are available.
Your Accommodation Options Although there are only 20 (all air-conditioned) accommodation units at Coconuts Beach Club Resort & Spa, there is a wide range of accommodation types which range from two-room Coco Suites and Treehouse Suites to 1 and 2 bedroom Beach Fales and the magnificent Royal Beach Villas.
With the exception of the Treehouse Suites, the suites and villas all feature unique and very special bathrooms. The bathrooms are described as “open air” bathrooms. Each is very spacious and is enclosed on the outside by a high natural lava stone wall. The whole bathroom has an opaque roof which lets in a lot of light and right around, between the roof and the top of the enclosing wall, there is a screened space of around 40 cm which allows air (but not insects!) to flow through – hence the “open air” description. This arrangement provides total privacy while delivering a lovely outdoor feel. The bathrooms are lined throughout in natural stone and the sunken waterfall shower is a very pleasant feature. The Treehouse Suites have spacious and modern but more conventional bathrooms.
Room Categories
Coco Suites Three, two-room suites. The Coco Suites are probably best described as having a garden view, but each one provides guests with a filtered view through the gardens and palms of the ocean from the room or terrace. Garden Suites are located furthest away from the beach, but that’s not very far at all. These suites are ideal for a couple seeking outstanding space and amenities, or for two couples or a family traveling together. Each spacious two room Coco Suite is comprised of a full-size bedroom with a king size-bed, and a good-size sitting room with space to sleep one or two additional adults. The bedroom and the sitting room both have a separate “open air” bathroom complete with sunken tub and lava rock waterfall shower. Large, folding louvre doors between the two rooms can be opened to create a spacious feeling if the suite is being used by just one or two people, or these doors can be closed to provide the privacy of two rooms if three or four people are occupying the Suite. All Suites have their own, individual slate covered terrace area, with an area for sunning and an area with a translucent cover for rain and sun protection. Beautiful teak and bamboo furniture and local materials compliment the extensive lava rock walls, creating the distinctive, Polynesian atmosphere. Maximum Occupancy: 4 Persons Existing Bedding Configuration: 1 King & 1 Double Bed
Treehouse Suites On gently rising ground up from the beach and the pool with unique views over a series of shallow ponds leading to the beach. These eight individual, spacious suites feature an entry vestibule, slate and hardwood floors and bamboo four-poster beds. The uniquely styled bathrooms offer a two-person bathtub-with-a-view and beautiful Quartzite stone floors and walls. There are enormous seven-meter wide decks with chaise lounges and hammocks for guests to enjoy the fabulous ocean view. The Treehouse Suites are located either on the ground floor or the first floor. Naturally, the first floor suites have a more extensive view. Maximum Occupancy: 3 Persons Existing Bedding Configuration: 1 Double & 1 Single or 1 King Bed
1 Bedroom Beach Fales The four 1 Bedroom Beach Fales are located directly on the beach frontage just meters from the water’s edge. They feature an open plan but split level design where the bedroom and bathroom are positioned up 4 steps above the lounge which opens directly on to a sizeable veranda. All fales have the unique open air bathrooms with lava-rock walls and a sunken shower nestled under a private “waterfall”. Finishing touches include thatched roofs, covered terraces facing the sea & island decor. Maximum Occupancy: 3 Persons Existing Bedding Configuration: 1 King Bed Additional Bedding: 1 Rollaway
2 Bedroom Beach Fales The two bedroom Beach Fales are located beside the 1 Bedroom Beach Fales, closer to the pool. Two Bedroom Beach Fales have one open air bathroom. Maximum Occupancy: 5 Persons Existing Bedding Configuration: 1 King & 2 Single Beds Additional Bedding: 1 Rollaway
Royal Beach Villas “The Royal Beach Villas are the most spacious suite of villas available in all of Samoa, if not the entire South Pacific. This complex of three villas is comprised of two one-story beach villas (Villa Pule and Villa Ali’i) flanking an immense, two-story central villa (Villa Matai). The two flanking villas each total over 600 sq. ft, including bedroom, sitting room, walk-in closet, writing alcove and large open-air style bathroom, complete with lava rock "waterfall" shower. The central fale is more than twice as spacious, and includes these same features as well as a second story private Observatory and balcony, which can also serve as additional sleeping quarters, accessed via an interior circular staircase. All three villas are architecturally unique with exterior walls of the living and bedrooms constructed entirely of poles and glass, split level design, exposed-beam pole ceilings and 180 degree views, all enhanced with local hardwoods, finely crafted lava rock walls and beautiful quartzite tile. These villas are connected via covered bridge, and can be booked as an entire suite or individually, making it perfect for anything from one couple to families or groups of up to ten people total. This is the ultimate in Polynesian style with a touch of high class!”
The Royal Beach Villas occupy a corner site between the Beach Fales and the Treehouse Suites facing over the pool and virtually right on the beach. Each villa has a single bathroom. Maximum Occupancy: 11 Persons Existing Bedding Configuration: 3 Kings Additional Bedding: 5 Rollaways
