NUKU HIVA PEARL LODGE
Taiohae Village, Nuku Hiva, Marquesa Islands, French Polynesia

Our Thoughts on Nuku Hiva Pearl Lodge
Built on a hillside, with stunning panoramic view of the bay and Taiohae Village, the Nuku Hiva Pearl Lodge is the only hotel on Nuku Hiva Island. Nestled amongst lush tropical gardens, its 20 bungalows blend perfectly into the natural surroundings.  Local craft and art is displayed throughout the property giving a distinctive Marquesan atmosphere. The Lodge has been renovated in 2018.  The renovation included brand new furniture around the pool as well as enhances lighting in the bungalows and the restaurant and bar.

There is a great atmosphere at this terrific little resort.  The Reception, restaurant and bar are at the end of the drive into the resort and there is a beautiful little swimming pool out front from which there are stunning views of the bay. The manager and staff offer “country friendliness” which goes with a concern to ensure all guests never leave without having had the best possible holiday on Nuku Hiva.

Make sure you visit The Cathedral of Notre Dame of the Marquesas Islands in Taiohae, the village below the resort, the Vaipo Waterfall which is 350 metres high, the many interesting archaeological sites with amazing history and the haunting Taipivai Valley to name but a few of the sights.  Enjoy the easy interaction with local people as you hike or cycle (bicycles are available at The Lodge for guests to use) the various trails (horse riding is the main form of transportation on this island) – all is readily accessible with assistance of the staff at Nuku Hiva Pearl Lodge.

Beaches are not a particular strength of Nuku Hiva, although there are many black-sand bays. However, there is one spectacular white-sand beach at Hakatea which can only be reached by foot or by boat and it’s certainly worth the effort taken to get there.

There is history galore on Nuku Hiva, a superb unspoiled environment, amazing scenic beauty and wonderful friendly people.  Nuku Hiva Pearl Lodge rates at 3 Star.  However, within the context of Nuku Hiva, we think you’ll be surprised and delighted at just how good it is and how well it fits in with the overall experience of a visit to Nuku Hiva.

What Nuku Hiva Pearl Lodge Say About Themselves:
“The Marquesas, or Henua Enata meaning "Land of Men", are a group of ‘high islands’, known for their spire-like green peaks rising from the deep indigo Pacific ocean.   Just 1500 km from Tahiti, Nuku Hiva is a mystic island where natural wonders abound such as 1000-foot waterfalls cascade down sheer volcanic cliffs, or towering mountains disappearing mysteriously in the clouds.

Nuku Hiva is the largest island in the Marquesas archipelago with 330 sq. km. (127 sq. miles) of surface area. Its beauty from the sea or in the air high above the island is truly breathtaking. The 2,500 inhabitants live in Taiohae and seven other smaller villages where they work for the government, the community, the Catholic church or school system or for themselves chopping copra high in the mountains, fishing, raising cattle and other livestock or sculpting bowls, platters, Marquesan ceremonial clubs, "tikis" and “ukuleles”.

Sundays and holidays are just as busy as any other day. Villagers drive back and forth along the seafront road in their 4-wheel drive vehicles, calling out to their friends possibly stopping to join the on going game of petanque, a French ball game like bacci, played under a flowering flamboyant tree in front of the town hall. Nearby the women sit under a shelter and win money playing bingo.

Located in a magnificent tropical garden, the Nuku Hiva Pearl Lodge overlooks the bay and village of Taiohae and the black sandy beach lying 50 steps below.

Each bungalow are built with local materials and each of them have carvings by a different artist from the Marquesas Islands.”

Your Accommodation Options
The 20 Bungalows at Nuku Hiva Pearl Lodge stretch along the low beach cliff off one side of the central facility and all have a view of the bay from their veranda.  The Premium Bay View Bungalows have uninterrupted views over the bay from their positions high up above the trees and the other bungalows.  Guests in the 12 Bay View Bungalows also enjoy great views of the bay which may be framed a little by palms and the 4 Garden Bungalows offer filtered views of the bay through the tropical gardens.

All accommodation units are the same size with the same facilities although each one differs slightly from its neighbours in the detail of its Marquesan décor. Each has a partially covered, furnished veranda and a modern bathroom with spacious shower and separate toilet.
