Our Thoughts on The Modern Honolulu
Something quite different in the Waikiki area, this 353 room hotel is in a totally renewed medium-rise tower building which, although it hasn’t changed a great deal as far as the exterior is concerned, is a revelation once you enter and become accustomed to the totally new and slightly modern-edgy interior where everything is light and white with a few timber highlights and a vivid splash of colour here and there! The whole experience from the public rooms to the guest rooms couldn’t be more removed from the old Hawaii – as one of Our Specialists observed on a recent visit – “Not a floral bedspread in sight”. It works, due, in no small part, to the pristine clean lines and the great range of facilities coupled with the warm natural friendliness of the Hawaiian staff and their eager willingness to provide their charming service on all occasions.
The location of The Modern Honolulu is a really interesting alternative to central Waikiki. We love the sometimes frenetic tourist pace of central Waikiki and all it has to offer, but, if you are seeking something handy to the main tourist strip but not right in its centre – something just a little more relaxed, then this neighbourhood may be worth considering. The Modern keeps company with The Ilikai and the Hilton Hawaiian Village on one side and the Ala Moana Centre just along the way in the other direction. Not only are you within easy walking distance of all the shops and food outlets of The Hilton Hawaiian Village, but you are within genuine walking distance of Ala Moana Shopping Centre and The Ala Moana Hotel, Ala Moana Park and the Ward Centre.
The Modern Honolulu is not on the beach, but is almost near enough to qualify as a beachfront hotel. The hotel fronts the Ala Wai Boat Harbour and there is a special walkway taking guests from The Modern to the Duke Kahanamoku Beach which fronts Duke’s Lagoon on Waikiki Beach. The Modern is almost a destination in itself with its multi dining options, chic bars and a terrific little nightclub tucked away behind a moving bookshelf off the lobby. Dining options include the famous Morimoto restaurant where the dining atmosphere is as special as the food experience.
The two swimming pools (the lower or Sunrise Pool and the upper Sunset Pool). The Sunrise Pool is the centre of the outdoor recreation activities and features sun-loungers and oversize day beds and VIP day beds which can be reserved at a cost for all-day use. Just up a staircase above The Sunset Pool, the exclusive Sunrise Pool is a one-of-a-kind “adults only” (18 and over) private “beach” with its own bar overlooking the ocean and a beachscape created with more than 100 tons of imported sand surrounding a circular, shallow, infinity-edge lagoon lined with custom designed glass tiles.
Meandering pathways paved with smooth pebbles add to the exotic feeling and creates a romantic enclave lit at night by lanterns and candles. The lagoon is furnished with lounge chairs set in the water so guests may easily cool off while sunning and lounging. The Pools are complemented by the well-equipped, 24 hour fitness centre/gymnasium and the Day Spa. Following through with their theme of providing exquisite service, the gym service includes fresh apples, cold filtered water, scented chilled towels, cable TV and headphones etc. At the swimming pools an attendant will prepare your seats/sun loungers with a cover as you arrive and there are lots of really nice additional touches too including sunscreen dispensers and complimentary pool-side services. It’s all very classy in a Hawaii-friendly way.
The guest rooms follow the modern theme with their clean, bright lines highlighted with a vivid splash of colour from a selection of colourful sarongs and, how about this – a brightly painted, tuned ukulele!

Your Accommodation Options
The Modern Honolulu has a good range of accommodation options from normal hotel studio rooms to 2 bedroom suites. The majority of rooms have what The Modern calls a “Terrace” (a furnished balcony) but some City View and Partial Ocean View rooms do not have a terrace and these are a slightly cheaper option. The rooms without a terrace still have nice big windows, so there is always an outlook of some sort, and all rooms, no matter what grade they are, have the same standard amenities.
Double Rooms include two double beds and King Rooms have one King Bed. Most room and suite types interconnect with another room. Interconnecting rooms may be guaranteed at an additional nightly charge.
Room Categories (In ascending order of tariff)
City View - Double Rooms:
Generous 36m2 City View Double Rooms are located on floors (3 to 17) closer to the city roads and facing away from the marina and beach. City View Rooms are set-up in exactly the same way as the more expensive room types but can be more susceptible to outside noise than some other room categories.

City View - King Rooms with Terrace:
Located on floors 3 to 17 – each room has a nice little outdoor terrace (balcony) facing the nearby buildings. City View King Rooms are 32m2, most have a shower but there are limited rooms with a bath. Rooms may interconnect. ADA compliant rooms available.

Partial Ocean View - Double Rooms:
36m2 Partial Ocean View Double Rooms are located on floors (4 to 17) with side-on views to the ocean and the marina.

Partial Ocean View - King Rooms with Terrace:
These rooms have a partial ocean view usually side-on between the resorts on either side of The Modern. 31.5m2 in area, the outlook from Partial Ocean View Rooms on the east side of the building is dominated by the Ilikai Hotel but there is a pleasant partial ocean view, as well as a view of the marina especially from the balcony of the “King Rooms with Terrace” (balcony). Floors 4 to 17.

Ocean View - King Rooms with Terrace:
On floors 4 to 17, the 31.5m2 Ocean View Rooms face the ocean or over the pools and marina. These rooms are generally on each side of the building but close to the front. Good angled ocean views are enjoyed but there will be some neighbouring buildings in sight.

Additional Bedding: 1 Air Bed can be added for the 3rd guest (adult or child).
Studio Suites:
Spacious, open-plan Suites at 31.5m2 on floors 3 to 6, with space for lounge furniture. Each has a good angled view of the ocean from the private terrace. Conveniently located near lifts.

Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed and 1 pull-out Sofa Bed.
Additional Bedding: No extra bedding accommodated.
Ocean Front 1 Bedroom Suites:
The 45m2 Ocean Front 1 Bedroom Suites are positioned on the corner of the building facing south and west on floors 4 to 16. They have a separate bedroom and separate living area. Featuring two Terraces, one of which provides a beautiful ocean view and the other a longer westerly ocean view over the marina where the sunsets can be spectacular.

Additional Bedding: 1 Air Bed can be added for the 3rd guest (adult or child).
Ocean View 1 Bedroom Suites:
Generally south-easterly facing, the Ocean View 1 Bedroom Suites feature a separate bedroom and separate living room and a single Terrace. 62m2 in area and located on floor 17 only.

Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed and 1 pull-out Sofa Bed.
Additional Bedding: No extra bedding accommodated.
Ocean Front 2 Bedroom Suites:
Located on floors 3 to 16, these suites are 81m2 and have two separate bedrooms and a separate living area with wide ocean, marina and sunset views. 2 Bathrooms.
Maximum Occupancy: 8 guests of any age
Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed in 1 bedroom and 2 Double Beds in the other bedroom and a pull-out Sofa Bed.

Getting to and from The Modern Honolulu
We will include seat-in-vehicle return airport transfers in holiday package arrangements as required/agreed. Private car transfers are an option at additional cost.
The Modern Honolulu is in a great location for walking to both the Ala Moana Shopping Centre and central Waikiki Beach. The hotel is next door to The Ilikai which itself, is next door to The Hilton Hawaiian Village so it is an easy walk over to the western end of Waikiki Beach and the Kahanamoku Lagoon in front of The Hilton Hawaiian Village and The Ilikai. A walk along the beach to central Waikiki will take around 15 minutes. Ala Moana Shopping Centre is around a 10-minute walk.
As with all the hotels in this area, The Bus routes are easily accessed and The Pink Line Waikiki Trolley stops almost outside every ten minutes or so. The Ala Moana Centre is a hub for transport so it’s easy to get virtually anywhere on Oahu from there.
The Aloha Trolley runs each way every 20 minutes and takes in Ala Moana Shopping Centre as well as The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Centre and other stops on Kalakaua Avenue then at various stops along Kuhio Avenue Waikiki. The Modern Honolulu is right at the centre of this loop which makes the Aloha Trolley a very handy way to get around the Waikiki/Ala Moana attractions when staying at this resort. Purchase a Day Pass on The Aloha Trolley and ride all day. For Hop-on/hop-off Trolley service the Waikiki Trolley Pink Line, which follows a similar route to the Aloha Trolley, passes every 10 minutes.

Cancellation Policy
All cancellations must be made in writing.
Cancellations received by the resort within 5 business
days (Hawaii Time) will incur a cancellation fee equal to
the cost of staying 1 night at the accommodation rate
booked.
Name changes are not permitted and may be treated as
cancellations.
Special Conditions for Christmas/New Year Bookings:
Bookings which include dates 26 December to 01 January
inclusive are required to be a minimum stay of 4 nights.
Bookings including these dates which are cancelled prior
to 25 November will incur a cancellation fee equal to the
cost of staying 2 nights at the rate booked.
Bookings including these dates which are cancelled from
25 November onwards will incur a cancellation fee equal
to 100% of the accommodation booked.
