412 Lewers Street, Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii

Our Thoughts on The Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club
Following a major redevelopment and makeover of this property, the Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club on Waikiki’s Lewers Street has morphed into an incredible destination for a Waikiki holiday.  Some years ago, Lewers Street was a little “patchy” in places but since the tasteful redevelopment of the whole Beach Walk precinct at the beach end of the street and the resulting increase in patronage brought to this end of Waikiki, the whole of Lewers Street has continued to improve. The Surfjack Hotel is a couple of blocks up Lewers Street from the beach in a very handy location; close to the action of Kuhio Avenue and Kalakaua Avenue and a 10-minute walk from Waikiki Beach.  As you walk, you pass many great shops, restaurants and attractions.  The main terminal for all the Waikiki Trolley Lines is half way along and from here you can board the trolleys to all the many destinations they service; from the Waikele Outlets on one direction to Diamond Head and further in the opposite direction and everything between.

The Surfjack developers have done an amazing job with the vintage Hawaii themed décor, room facilities and the public facilities too.  It’s all sparkling clean and new, the staff are all happy to be there and it shows.

The lobby and the pool area is the heart of the hotel and it’s here that the “vintage Hawaii” theme really comes to the fore with the laid-back Hawaiian-style music and movie events throughout the week – staying at The Surfjack you can’t help but get caught up in the pleasing vibe of old Hawaii which has been achieved while maintaining a full range of modern hotel facilities and services.  To invite local people to join the “Swim Club” is a master-stroke which allows hotel guests, should they wish, to mingle with locals and enhance their Hawaii experience. The Swim Club is a membership club within the hotel that offers perks for those dining at the hotel’s Mahina & Sun’s restaurant, exciting pool-side events from DJs spinning and filmaker screenings to creative workshops, private cabanas etc.

The Surfjack Hotel is a very welcome addition to our Hawaii portfolio and is well worth considering as an alternative to the more highly-priced Waikiki beach-front properties. If your idea of a perfect Hawaiian holiday is to experience something of the legendary Hawaii you may have seen in movies, while enjoying a good modern standard of accommodation and services and a great location, The Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club could be the one for you.

What The Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club Say About Themselves
"Providing an authentic and vibrant Honolulu experience in the heart of Waikiki.  The Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club is a newly renovated boutique hotel located steps to the area’s best beaches, shopping, dining and nightlife.  The hotel features bright and playful bungalows and one, two and three-bedroom suites with personable touches for a memorable stay.  Unique services and amenities include: cultural programming at the Swim Club, Mahina & Sun’s restaurant by innovative chef Ed Kenney and Olive & Oliver an apparel shop featuring eclectic curated goods.

Here in Hawaii, hospitality doesn’t come with a stiff lip and white gloves. We think true Hawaiian hospitality is about treating your guests like they were part of your ohana. It’s this mindset that’s at the core of everything we do here. To create The Surfjack, we wanted to pay homage to the true soul of Waikiki, not the prefabricated version peddled to the masses. To bring our vision to life, we collaborated with some of Honolulu’s brightest visionaries to build a hotel reminiscent of the city’s mid-century heyday, all the while celebrating the effervescent creative movement that’s reshaping the city today.

Nestled on Lewers Street, we’re but a short walk or bike ride to some of the most storied beaches, waves, and shopping in the country. And when it comes to dining, we’re proud to have teamed up with famed local chef Ed Kenney to create Mahina & Sun’s, offering a progressive-yet-comforting menu that’s representative of Hawaii’s real palate.

When you’re not lounging at the beach or exploring the island, we welcome you to sprawl out at the Swim Club, a space where both locals and visitors alike can comfortably congregate by the pool over the perfect cocktail and talk story. If the mood hits you, you can always catch one of our nightly movie screenings at the pool. And at our men’s and women’s boutique, Olive & Oliver, we’ve built a shop that’s both contemporary and quintessentially authentic to Hawaii.

From our 112 vintage-inspired rooms, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a comfortable and mid-century aesthetic. But you didn’t come to Honolulu to stay inside, did you? We didn’t think so, that’s why we encourage all of our guests to get out and explore this amazing island, step slightly outside their comfort zones, and make a memory they’ll be talking about for decades to come. Welcome to the Surfjack, a swell little spot in Waikiki.

Your Accommodation Options
With only 112 units, Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club is designated a “boutique property” by Waikiki standards.  The rooms and suites are in two 10-level, joined “towers” which form a “V” shape around the courtyard pool.  In keeping with the retro-Hawaii theme, the studio hotel rooms are called “bungalows” but please don’t confuse this term with a stand-alone 1-level bungalow we are familiar with in the South Pacific – the so-called One Room Bungalows at Surfjack Hotel are rooms in a mid-rise hotel block.  Irrespective of the description, they are very pleasant rooms indeed and do have something of a bungalow feel about them.

The One Bedroom Suites are a very good option if you are looking for a bit more space around you.  While there are lifts to all the main floors, guests staying in either the One Room Bungalow Penthouse or the One Bedroom Suites Penthouse on the top floor, are required to walk up one floor as the lifts stop on the floor below.
