MOUNU ISLAND RESORT
Mounu Island, Vava’u, Tonga

OUR Thoughts on Mounu Island Resort
Mounu Island is just about the most perfect South Pacific tropical island you could imagine. It’s an oval-shaped low island which, apart from one small rocky outcrop, is completely surrounded by a perfect white sand beach. The interior is shaded with coconut palms and natural tropical shrubs and trees and sandy paths meander through the palms. You could walk right around the 6.5 acre island in around 15 minutes.

Mounu Island is the southernmost inhabited island in the Vava’u group and while there are a number of uninhabited islands quite close by, Mounu Island gives people staying here a warm and wonderful feeling of being on an unspoilt natural island. This is a very special island, well away from the stresses of everyday life. Kick off your shoes when you arrive – you’ll hardly need them again until you leave!

There are only four Fales and one main hotel building that make up the entire resort. The Fales are dispersed around the perimeter of the island, so each is private and secluded and each has a stretch of beach out front where the footprints in the sand will probably only be those you make yourself. Their “no kids under the age of 12 years” policy ensures the only sounds you hear from your Fale will be the sound of waves on the shore, the flicking of the palm fronds in the sea breezes and the occasional call of a passing sea bird. This is a truly great spot to relax although there are plenty of activities available if you want to be active. It’s a spectacular spot for a honeymoon or a special anniversary. Of course, if your stay coincides with the whale watching season, you will have the added benefit of watching and/or swimming with the whales.

Whale season or not, Mounu Island is a perfect place to visit and rejuvenate yourself at any time of year.

Mounu Island Resort is only a 30 minute sheltered boat ride away from town and a boat goes in every day to collect supplies. Guests are welcome to tag along – no charge!

The quality of the resort and the exclusivity afforded by there being only 4 totally private Fales on the entire island means that the tariff here is a little more expensive than most other island resorts in Tonga, but there is no doubt about the value for money. The restaurant serves exceptional food and we are impressed with the little thoughtful extras provided – such as “home-made” coconut or breadfruit chips brought to you as you enjoy the sunset with a pre-dinner drink; we also love the fresh bread and bread rolls baked daily.

Two meal plans are offered:
Bullet Half-Meal Plan: Breakfast and Dinner daily
Bullet Full Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Daily
Includes cooked or continental breakfast, 2 course lunch and 3 course dinner, complimentary hot beverages and juices and nibbles served before dinner at cocktail hour as well as a complimentary welcome drink on arrival.

Minimum Stay Policy:
Mounu Island Resort has a minimum 3 nights stay policy year round.

The warm waters of Vavau provide an abundance of seafood. The freshest Tuna, Marlin, Wahoo, Coral Trout, Snapper and Lobster all feature on the menu.

Organic locally grown produce is the main source of seasonal vegetables and fruit. Bread is baked daily on the Island. Organic meat and chicken is flown in direct from NZ and compliments the local Vavau produce perfectly. The menu is table d’ hote and based on Pacific Rim style. Our Chef is happy to discuss the day’s menu and accommodate any special dietary needs you may have.

Our bar, Moby Dick’s stocks a reasonable range of white/red wines, liqueurs, spirits and beer. Specialty tropical cocktails are available for that real beach feel.

Kick back and relax, the library is well stocked with a variety of books to suit everyone’s tastes, grab a book and hit the hammock or try star-gazing – our telescope is set up in the Main building and we will help you spot the Southern Cross and other stars. Try Bird Watching - Tonga is home to many land and sea birds including the endemic Tongan Whistler which is only found in the Vava’u group.

If you’re looking to try some activities on your holiday then there's plenty to keep you busy here.

Diving – excellent local operators are available, Snorkelling - bring your own snorkel equipment or be provided with a set for you stay while on Mounu Island. Snorkelling off the beach is easily accessible and teeming with fish life and stunning corals. Kite boarding - The trade winds make Mounu ideal for beginners through to advanced riders. Kite boarding lessons at Mounu are available from May-Sept with gear hire and purchase also available. Or simply bring your own kite boarding gear with you.

Fish Feeding - Ask for a chunk of bread and feed the snapper off the beach in front of Moby Dicks.

Big Game Fishing - There are a number of operators who can take you out to land a Mahi Mahi, Marlin, Tuna or Wahoo. Vava’u is recognized as one of the top Blue Marlin spots in the world. Your chef will prepare your catch just the way you like it. Kayaking - We have a couple of Kayaks available for you to paddle around the island or across to Ovalau our neighbouring uninhabited Island. We can provide a picnic hamper and you can either kayak or we can transfer you to Ovalau Island for the day for a beach picnic.

We were the first licensed whale watch operator in Tonga and have been operating now for over 10 years. We have qualified local guides and experienced crew aboard who are there to ensure your safety and to find you whales! The whale season is normally July through October.

The warm waters surrounding Vava'u make ideal calfing and mating grounds for the magnificent Humpback Whale. Getting up close and personal with these magnificent animals is a once in a lifetime experience and we recommend whale watching in Vavau to all our visitors."

Your Accommodation Options
The 4 Fales at Mounu are all individual in design. There are 3 categories – 1 Honeymoon Fale, 1 Superior Fale and 2 Standard Fales. All are designed to blend in with the natural surroundings and their traditional Tongan style adds immeasurably to the relaxing ambience of this beautiful little resort.

Every Fale has a very high traditionally rounded interior roof line and coconut pole construction combined with a modern shingle roof. The straight and rounded walls are built of local timber and many of the windows are not glazed to aid capturing of the sea breezes – these windows have a let-down wooden shutter if required – most guests choose to leave them open. There is a large mosquito net which drops down around the bed when required. Each Fale has an ensuite bathroom with plenty of hot water and an electric fan. Beach towels are provided in addition to the bath towels. Fales are serviced daily. Each has a lovely big, partially covered wooden deck with lounging furniture.
