OUR Thoughts on Liku’alofa Beach Resort
Tonga is a special destination for those seeking a wonderful, relaxing holiday in a unique South Pacific country far away from all the trappings of big multinational resorts.  The holiday resorts in Tonga are predominantly owned and operated by people who have either been born in the country or who have lived there for some time before deciding to share their knowledge and experiences with visitors.  As a result of this, you will find the people running the little resorts extremely welcoming, helpful and willing to offer guests, not only a relaxing holiday experience, but also a touch of the Tongan lifestyle and culture.  Liku’alofa Beach Resort is one such place. We have found the accommodation to be comfortable within the country-style beach environment found on the western tip of Tongatapu – Tonga’s main island, where Liku’alofa is located.  We’ve also found that by engaging with the staff on a warm and friendly basis, the holiday experience is enhanced no end.

Immediately outside the resort, an area of the lagoon has been cleared of coral and a swimming pool has been built in the sea straight off a section of the beach.  The pool fills and empties with the tides.  Natural coral still exists in the lagoon outside the pool where there is great snorkelling, swimming and kayaking in the clear lagoon waters. On a pleasant walk 1km along the beach, you pass 2 or 3 little beach resorts enroute to Ha’atufu Beach which is renowned for being the departure point for accessing surfing in the outer reef area.

The waterfront area at Liku’alofa is a very pleasant place to be with its Treetop Bar and restaurant, from which the views out to sea are superb and at night the sunsets can be spectacular.  Whales are often able to be seen from here during the whale migration season.  Cultural Nights which comprise a Tongan food inspired buffet dinner and live entertainment are a highlight of any stay at Liku’alofa. Prices for the Cultural Night are very reasonable at (NZD) $36 per adult and $18 per child aged under 12 years.  Cultural Nights are held 7:00pm to 9:00pm on Wednesdays and Fridays each week.  For those on a strict time limit and staying elsewhere for the majority their time in Tonga, it is well worth considering staying at Liku’alofa on a Wednesday or Friday night just to take in the excellent Cultural Night. For those contemplating a longer stay, don’t overlook the fact we offer a Stay 5/Pay 4 Special year round.

This is not a place for slick service, indeed one of the many delights is the fact that the whole place runs on “Tonga Time” which means that service may be a bit slow on occasions, but in the context of a beach holiday in Tonga, this adds to the laid-back enjoyment of the place.  For guests requiring dinners at a specific time, it is easy to pre-order meals to be ready at a specific time.  For those not in a hurry, there is always another cold drink to be enjoyed as the sun sets over the outer reef.

Bullet Swim with The Humpback Whales
June to October each year is the time the humpback whales visit Tonga and staying at Liku’alofa it is easy to join a daily tour (excluding Sunday) out to the whales.  The tour is with Deep Blue Diving who quote:

“Once-In-A Lifetime Experience – If you plan your arrival in to Tonga with that of the humpback whales (June to October) you can experience something that very few can say they have done. Tonga is one of only a few places in the world where you can swim with the whales. We will take you up close and personal with these amazing marine creatures. You’ll watch from a distance and only swim if the whales are calm and happy for us to do so. Out of respect for their privacy, we allow the whales to make the call, if they are interested in swimming with us or not.”

Tours departs daily except Sunday from Faua Wharf at 10:00am returning 4:00pm and we are happy to pre-book and include Swim-with-The-Whales tours in package arrangements.

What Liku'alofa Beach Resort, Say About Themselves:
“With its Polynesian-style fales, locally thatched roofs and warm hearted local staff there’s no forgetting you’re staying in Tonga. Enjoy delicious Tongan meals and experience authentic Tongan entertainment.

Liku’alofa Beach Resort is situated on the west coast of Tongatapu, fringed with palm trees, surrounded by lush tropical gardens and sits along a stretch of white sandy beach. It’s a 35 minute drive from the International Airport, so you’ll be unpacked and relaxing ‘Tongan-style‘  in no time at all.

Nestled in 14 acres of tropical land are the 15 comfortable fales that make up Liku’alofa. Each of the spacious fales has its own private en-suite bathroom. The tiled floors and overhead fans will ensure you’re comfortable while the private terrace is a great spot to sit and view the ocean and stunning sunsets. With a range of accommodation styles to suit -from the Garden View Fales, some with peeks of the ocean, to the Ocean View Fales with unobstructed sea views, just steps away from the oceans edge, you’re sure to find the right fit. And for families or 2 couples travelling together, the duplex Garden View Fales with interconnecting doors are ideal. Make sure your stay includes a Wednesday or Friday night as the resort hosts one of the best cultural shows in Tonga.

The Sunset Bar & Restaurant serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week for resort guests and visitors alike. Kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear can be hired and if you’re keen to discover the capital Nuku’alofa, you’re just a 20-minute ride away. Your Accommodation Options
Of the 15 Fales at Liku’alofa Beach Resort, 10 are designated Garden View and 5 are designated Ocean View.  The main differences between the two lie firstly in their location in the resort grounds and secondly, in the fact that Ocean View Fales are all stand-alone bungalows and the Garden View Fales are all in duplex units (2 to a building) with a shared veranda/balcony.

Accommodation is serviced daily except Sunday and Tropical Breakfast is included in the room tariff.

Apart from sharing a veranda, both fales in each duplex unit have an interconnecting door which may be unlocked if a family takes 2 fales or for 2 couples travelling together who like to stay connected. When a family books the interconnecting option, both fales share 1 fridge. However, when the fales are not interconnected, there is a fridge provided in each individual fale.

The hotel provides a meet and greet service at the airport and return airport transfers for their guests.
Getting Around
Bicycles and cars may be rented from Liku’alofa and there are pleasant beach walks to be enjoyed in this location.  If your stay at Liku’alofa is for a week or so, we thoroughly recommend you hire a car for at least half of your stay duration - there is a lot to see and enjoy around Tongatapu.  However, it is possible to cycle around the Hihifo area and the local buses, which are certainly not luxurious (but are great fun) will take you the 18km-or-so into Nuku’alofa for approximately NZ$2.00 each way.  A 400 metre walk takes you to Hihifo Road to catch the bus. For those less inclined to poke around on their own, Liku’alofa offer 2 tours for guests to purchase while staying at the resort.  Both are well worth doing - the first one is a 5-hour tour taking in Tongatapu’s main points of interest - Bats Colony, Blowholes, Ha’amonga Trilithon, Anahulu Cave, pass the Royal Palace, Captain Cook Landing and provides personal time to lunch in Nuku’alofa (own expense).  The second tour is a day trip to Fafa Island Resort with BBQ lunch included; this tour departs Likualofa at 10:00am daily returning at 4:00pm.
