OUR Thoughts on Heilala Holiday Lodge
Heilala, which has recently upgraded to full 3 Star rating, is one of the many beautiful little character-filled resort properties we offer in Tonga. The new owners have advised that they intend to continue to upgrade and expand the resort a little as time goes on, but, for now (and into the future we're sure), there is something disarmingly charming about this place that sets it apart as a perfect choice for a relaxing holiday break.

Tongatapu Island is not well known for its white-sand beaches, the coastline of the island varies considerably from rocky exposed outcrops where waves thunder in causing blowholes to erupt into the air, to the tidal gravel shores around Nuku’alofa, to the shallow beaches of the inner lagoon, but there are also some spectacular beaches and west-facing Ha’atafu Beach (where Heilala Holiday Lodge is located), is one of those.

Heilala Holiday Lodge on Ha’atafu Beach is found 40 kilometres or so from the airport if you travel via Nuku’alofa, so it’s easy to drop into Nuku’alofa for supplies if required; not that the distance is an imposition at all because, if arriving in daylight you get to see a whole lot of Tongatapu on the way. It is 18 kms between Heilala Holiday Lodge and Nuku’alofa town.

Heilala Holiday Lodge is one of three resort-style properties built along Ha’atafu Beach, the others being Vakaloa and Liku’alofa Resorts, both of which are easy walking distance along the beach from Heilala Holiday Lodge. A few hundred metres off-shore there is excellent reef-breaking surf. Whale sightings are a regular feature during the whale season which is normally late July through October. Heilala is in a truly great location, the beach is really superb and the snorkelling right off the beach is excellent.  Heilala Holiday Lodge does carry a limited supply of snorkelling gear, however, if you have room in your luggage we suggest you pack a set of snorkelling gear as well as a beach towel and some reef-walking shoes. There is good surfing off-shore Heilala but surfing is controlled by a specific operator and not necessarily available for the free use of the public.

Even though the accommodation we offer is either in free-standing private fales (ten of them) or the recently added Heilala Family House and the brand new 1-Bedroom and 2-Bedroom Apartments, there is still something lingering of the former “Guest House” atmosphere that makes a welcome addition to the experience of staying here. The dining/bar fale is where breakfast is served each day and where all guests meet and mingle. Tropical breakfast is included in the tariff and optional cooked breakfasts are also available at supplementary cost. Lunch and dinner is also served, but these meals are provided on a “request” basis. A simple menu is posted each morning and guests wanting lunch or dinner are asked to place their orders in the morning. In our experience, dinners at Heilala are a wonderful experience. There are options of either cooking your own food in the communal kitchen or wandering off down the beach to either of the other resorts if you decide not to pre-order meals at Heilala. You might decide to bring snack food from home or purchase it in Nuku’alofa if you like a quiet drink and snack on your veranda, but please note, only the Superior Fales, the Apartments and the Heilala Family House have a small fridge to keep food and drinks cool. Don’t overlook the friendly little bar and games room for mingling with other guests and relaxing - especially around sunset time!

The host is wonderful. Nothing is a problem and guests are offered friendly assistance with everything from trips to town, personalised tours around the island, assistance with how to use the local buses, car rentals, whale watching, snorkelling, diving – anything. Scooters and bicycles are available for hire, and although you probably wouldn’t be comfortable riding a bicycle into Nuku’alofa, they are a great way to get around the local villages and local sights. For those into walking, there are several interesting sites (some closer than others) within approximately 4kms of Heilala.

Heilala is built within a botanic garden and the fales are located in two rows; the upper row face toward the ocean (west) and the lower face toward the land (east). The fales have been placed to create a traditional village set-up. The garden is contained within a low fence which encircles the property to keep wandering domestic animals out of the garden. This is also handy for peace of mind for guests with young children as, to access the public beach (the beach sand flows directly from the property) you need to go through the garden gate. The beach sand also almost surrounds the fales and guests are lulled to sleep at night by the waves breaking on the fringing reef.

What Heilala Holiday Lodge Say About Themselves:
A real holiday!

If the Kingdom of Tonga is part of your upcoming travel plans, be sure to let us help you make the most out of your visit. Since 1994 it has been our pleasure to provide our guests with a home-away- from-home and ensuring that what generally starts with “a trip overseas” becomes a real holiday!

The new and improved Heilala Holiday Lodge is now located on the stunning sandy beaches of Haʻatafu and Kanokupolu, with the most picturesque sunsets, the best surfing on the main island, great snorkelling and a beautiful sandy beach that stretches over a kilometre long and from where you can spot Tonga’s famous humpback whales in season.

We offer a variety of accommodation options to suit every holiday budget. These are our “most popular” Superior fales and for the “budget conscious”, our Tongan fales. All fales (bungalows) are located in a botanical garden setting and have equal access to the communal kitchen and all other onsite guest facilities! The fales are constructed using traditional Tongan designs, but with the addition of modern creature comforts.

One of the great changes from moving the lodge to Haʻatafu Beach must be the additional activities that are now available at your doorstep. In addition to enjoying the botanical garden we occupy, our guests can also enjoy long beach walks, romantic sunsets, wave surfing, snorkelling, whale watching from the shore (in season) and village walks or bicycle excursions through some of the Kingdom’s most welcoming and traditionally preserved communities.

There are other Resort Restaurants in the vicinity, but if you wish to dine in, we are right here for you! We serve breakfast from 8 to 9.30 am (standard "island style" breakfast is included with your stay) as well as lunch and dinner (on pre-order). Our dinner options change daily and can include local and international dishes, such as the Lobster (crayfish), Seafood platter, Snapper fillet and Tuna steak as well as Chicken, Pork, Beef and more. If you are a vegetarian we can certainly cater for you as well, just talk to us about our daily vegetarian choice.

Hope to welcome you soon,

ʻOfa atu, your Heilala team

Note re Minimum Stay Policy
Heilala Holiday Lodge has a minimum 2 night stay policy.

Bullet Swim with The Humpback Whales
June to October each year is the time the humpback whales visit Tonga and staying at Liku’alofa it is easy to join a daily tour (excluding Sunday) out to the whales.  The tour is with Deep Blue Diving who quote as follows:

“Once-In-A Lifetime Experience – If you plan your arrival in to Tonga with that of the humpback whales (June to October) you can experience something that very few can say they have done. Tonga is one of only a few places in the world where you can swim with the whales. We will take you up close and personal with these amazing marine creatures. You’ll watch from a distance and only swim if the whales are calm and happy for us to do so. Out of respect for their privacy, we allow the whales to make the call, if they are interested in swimming with us or not.”

Tours departs daily except Sunday from Faua Wharf at 10:00am returning 4:00pm and we are happy to pre-book and include Swim-with-The-Whales tours in package arrangements.

Your Accommodation Options
We offer three accommodation options; Superior Fales, Tongan Fales, the recently-added Heilala Family House and the all-new One and Two Bedroom Apartments. There are 10 Fales in all and these are located in 2 rows, one row being a little further back from the beach than the other. Being laid out in the form of a Tongan Village results in the Fales being sited in a tropical garden setting, back a little from the beach and although you can hear the sea from your fale and you are located close to the beach, you don’t get sea views from the fales.  Fales are not air-conditioned, but, due to their traditional-style construction this is not normally an issue. They are open-plan, have high roofs in the traditional Tongan style and excellent flow-through ventilation. Windows are all insect-screened. Each has a ceiling fan, ensuite bathroom and a small veranda which comes complete with a hammock. The fales are kept spotlessly clean.
