Fafa Island, off Nuku’alofa,Tongatapu, Kingdom of Tonga.

OUR Thoughts on Fafa Island Resort
Fafa Island Resort, is a small, high quality eco-chic island resort which is located only 30 minutes by boat from Tonga’s capital, Nuku’alofa. We have known Fafa Island Resort very well for some years now and can thoroughly recommend it for delivering a consistently high standard and a delightfully unique holiday experience.

A major attraction of a holiday at Fafa Island Resort is the attraction of being able to transfer to and from the mainland at any time day or night.  This makes Fafa Island a very good choice, not only for a longer stay-put holiday but also for a long-weekend quick break as you get the whole stay on the island without having to worry about flights arriving late or the need to stay overnight on the mainland at either end of your holiday

We reckon Fafa is one of the ultimate places to chill and recharge. There is no TV, no radio and no noise! However, in deference to the modern need for people to stay in touch electronically while on holiday, Wifi reception is normally available in the Bar area.  Each individual Fale bungalow faces its own little piece of beach (The Superior Fales can be a little further back) and is surrounded by tropical gardens on the land side. There’s no settling-in period needed – you are totally relaxed from the moment you arrive. All the buildings on Fafa Island are built in the traditional Tongan style with high ceilings, lovely covered decks and louvre windows which provide natural cooling. The restaurant and bar are virtually on the beach and the food is stunning. There is not a great number of menu options, but who cares about that when the chef comes around each morning and asks you what you would like him to prepare for dinner. Crayfish every night? No problem! If you catch a fish during the day – it will be your fish served at dinner that night.

Fafa normally provides 2 complimentary boat trips each day to Nuku’alofa so, any day, it is really easy to enjoy all the sights and activities on the “mainland” and then return to this beautiful island and its peace and tranquillity. There are opportunities to visit the Craft and Produce Market in town and to enjoy one of the several cafés either in the town or overlooking the harbour. Your hosts at Fafa Island Resort offer an optional day trip on a Sunday that takes in a church service where the singing has to be heard to be believed. From July to October whales migrate through the whole Tonga Archipelago and it is not unknown for whales to be sighted in the lagoon close to Fafa Island. When this occurs, guests are invited to take a resort boat ride out to view the whales close up and when conditions are favourable there is the opportunity to swim with the whales.

There are lots of little touches we like about Fafa Island Resort. Like the morning delivery to your fale of boiling water for you to make coffee or tea, the fact that you can get complimentary tea/coffee from the restaurant at any time when you take one of the Meal Plans and the personal delivery of a kerosene lamp to you fale balcony each evening to light your way. The Massage Fale in the island interior is a perfect spot for a traditional Polynesian massage and the Library Fale is a haven of peace and tranquillity. Once a week the staff put on a so-called “amateur” traditional Tongan entertainment – wow! The singing is magnificent and the whole show is a great experience.

What Fafa Island Resort Tonga Say About Themselves:
“Fafa Island Resort, an 18 acres palm covered atoll, is located only 30 minutes by motor sailor from Nuku’alofa, the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga on the main island.

The island is guarded by a coral reef ensuring all time safe swimming and snorkeling in crystal clear blue waters. Deserted sand beaches invite you to relax and lie in the sun.

The accommodation on the resort resembles a Polynesian village surrounded by gardens.  The traditional Tongan style bungalows are built with natural materials: palm poles, wooden shingles, coconut thatch and palm timber floors. All Fales are just a few steps from the water’s edge with unobstructed views of the ocean. Each has a private beach and is set apart from other fales for maximum privacy.

All Fales have a courtyard with semi open bathroom and shower in a private flower garden. A covered veranda, spacious bedrooms with king size beds, dressing room, ceiling fan, hammock and beach beds. Some Deluxe bungalows have an extra building containing the bathroom, a walk-in wardrobe and extra room for 2 beds, plus a large partly covered veranda with comfortable deck chairs.  The Honeymoon Fales are individually designed with breathtaking views over the Pacific Ocean.

Dine under the stars in the open-air restaurant on the beach or indoors in the traditional thatched Fale. Fafa cuisine is famous for its unique contemporary Pacific European gourmet dishes. The open-air cocktail bar offers a wide range of tropical cocktails and wines.

There is free use of kayaks, snorkeling equipment, French boule and volleyball.  Also, we offer daily snorkel trips to unspoiled reefs and islands. As well as diving and game fishing, whale watching and swimming with the whales (in season from July to October) can be arranged with local operators. The reef and lagoon of Fafa Island is a declared marine reserve. Therefore, no unauthorized water sports, fishing and other activities, which might disturb the marine life, is allowed.

A delightful resort with an uncomplicated lifestyle where bungalows have no TV or telephone. Let our local staff entertain you with a weekly Polynesian dance show evening.

Fafa Island offers true island living for all people wanting to get away...”

Your Accommodation Options
Of the 13 Fales offered by Fafa Island Resort, 7 are designated Superior and 6 are designated Deluxe (2 of these are Honeymoon Fales). The difference is in the size. Deluxe Fales are bigger all-round and feel more luxurious. However, both types are the same style with beautiful, Polynesian-inspired natural wooded interiors, soaring vaulted ceilings and palm-wood flooring. Neither type is air-conditioned, simply because the traditional style Tongan architecture cools naturally, even in the height of summer, and all accommodation has ceiling fans, just in case the sea breezes are taking a break. You may want to leave the louvered windows open at night to catch the breezes and to accommodate this, the beds have drop-down mosquito netting – very romantic!

Every Fale has a small fridge, ceiling fan, a day bed, sitting area and a private hammock outside. A feature of every bathroom is its inside/outside flow with the vanity opening on to a totally private courtyard with the shower under the open sky in a lovely flower garden setting. The Fales at Fafa Island are located facing the beach on both sides of the new central beachside restaurant and bar area and all are private from each other.
