Mbabanga Island, off Gizo, Western Province, Solomon Islands

" Sanbis Resort Total Exclusivity!

Located on a secluded island approximately 7 minutes from the Gizo airstrip by boat, Sanbis Resort offers the premier accommodation in the country, with each bungalow having its own private beach, luxury ensuite bathrooms with hot water and a terrace with a stunning view across the lagoon.

Solomon Islands’ Premier Resort – Dive, Fish or simply Relax!

Sitting amidst coastal trees and coconut palm is your Leaf House Villa with its veranda over a tranquil lagoon.

Opened in 2005, Sanbis Resort is for the holiday-maker who wants something unique.

Enjoy snorkelling in front of your private bungalow in 30 degree waters, join activities provided by Solomon Water sport located at the in-house dive centre or simply relax to your heart’s content.

To maintain total exclusivity, the resort has six bungalows, generally limited to 12 guests at any one time. Each bungalow incorporates a modern ensuite bathroom with hot shower, has its own secluded beach and is totally separated from the others. To ensure tranquillity, Sanbis Resort a “KIDS FREE” haven (no children under 12 years of age).

Enjoy a short stroll through the tropical jungle with its natural perfume of exotic flowers to the other side of the island. A perfect haven for sundowners and pre-dinner drinks as you watch the magnificent sunsets over Simbo Island. We only have one policy…to please you!

We offer lavish breakfasts with an array of tropical fruit, fresh juices, bread baked in our in-house wood fire oven…and of course fresh coffee. The over the water – SB BAR located near the end of the jetty provides another opportunity for wining and dining. A great location overlooking the lagoon – a brilliant experience, especially from the upstairs balcony. The bar is open to the public, however, only in-house guests are able to enjoy the privacy of the resort restaurant and bar located at the beach side of the jetty. You can enjoy great Pizzas from the ONLY genuine Wood Fire Pizza Oven in the Western Province – located in the SB Bar.

Our chef creates exotic seafood delicacies, spicy island BBQ’s in the reef hut and a wide variety of western style meals with an island touch. Entrees ranging from our special Sashimi to the most delicious soups can be enjoyed for lunch and dinner. If you like, at the Jetty house, you can even BBQ your own fish after returning from a fishing trip!  The SB BAR menu offers great value for money pub style, bar snacks such as hot dogs, hamburgers etc.

We are a very eco-friendly place. All lighting is solar powered, unlike all other resorts our sewerage is treated and the last stage used in our gardens and as a result our reef is still pristine. Despite being an eco-responsible place, all our bungalows have (proper) ceiling fans, which run 24 hours a day (at night time on inverters from the solar system). By following environmental guidelines, we minimize the impact on our aquatic ecosystem whilst contributing to environmental, economic and cultural conservation.

We have Wireless internet access at the SB Bar (bring your own laptop) and batteries for cameras, computers and the like can be charged anytime at the Resort bar/restaurant or the SB Bar. Internet You are not completely isolated! Bring your laptop and you can stay in touch with your family or business connecting to our high speed (WI-FI) link with civilisation!”

Our Thoughts on Sanbis Resort
Sanbis Resort is a special place.  It is something of a “personality resort” in that the laid-back personality of the owner/builder/manager shines through the whole place and adds something special to the holiday experience here.  There is no doubting the fact that Sanbis has been built on environmental principles and maintains an environmentally friendly presence, while not overlooking the need for modern comforts for guests.  All the buildings, whether they be accommodation bungalows or public spaces exude traditional Solomon Islands ambience in the form of real thatched roofs, local timber floors and joinery, woven wall panels etc., all complimented by modern enhancements such as solar power backed up by generators to keep the beer cold, Satellite TV and wifi.

The resort has a very good restaurant and bar for the exclusive use of guests which serves terrific meals featuring the freshest seafood as well as international dishes to suit all tastes and a pretty good range of drinks too.

The friendly, informal, public overwater SB Bar located down a longish jetty out front of the private resort restaurant adds something special to a stay at Sanbis Resort. The SB Bar is a 2 level traditional-style building with an open outdoor area on the top level and a buzzing bar on the lower level.  Locals from around the island and even people from Gizo Town pull up at the SB Bar in their boats to enjoy the convivial atmosphere, the pool table and the superb pizzas produced in the wood-fired pizza oven. Guests of Sanbis Resort enjoy the opportunity to socialise with the ‘locals’ and enjoy their company in this public area which doesn’t encroach at all on the private resort environment.

Being located in the middle of the “marine playground” in the Western Province means marine activities are a feature here.  There is a resident resort dive company running a very good professional dive operation.  The dive sites within easy access of Sanbis are world-class and the marine life is phenomenal. An artificial reef has been created just off the end of the Sanbis Jetty where a Japanese Fishing boat has been sunk and this is accessible direct off the jetty – it’s a spectacular night dive. Of course, being the Solomon Islands, there are plenty of WW11 relics to dive on within easy access of Sanbis and Gizo.

Apart from diving there is also surfing, great snorkelling, line fishing, Waterskiing, Knee boarding, Windsurfing, Kayaking (Free of charge) and Parasailing. Sanbis guests also have access to a deep sea charter fishing boat with live-aboard option.

There are good walks to be enjoyed on Mbabanga Island as well as village visits.  Picnics on nearby quiet beaches and visits to WW11 land sites.  Sanbis is really handy to Gizo town and Sanbis guests find it very handy to take the short hop by boat into town for supplies, shopping and sightseeing.

The bungalows are lovely and apart from The Lodge complex, do not have electric power points.  However, guests are welcome to use the electric power points in the reception area to charge mobile phones and electronic devices and this works really well.

There’s a really good atmosphere at Sanbis Resort – they have managed to work out the balance between traditional and modern facilities so well that almost as soon as you arrive you fall into comfortable relaxation mode. You leave Sanbis having had a great Solomon Islands experience – don’t make your stay too short!

Your Accommodation Options
There’s a lot going for the accommodation options at Sanbis Resort.  The two main accommodation options are the 6 stand-alone bungalows in the vicinity of the restaurant and main jetty and The Lodge which is located 250 metres away on the other side of the island. The bungalows are all built on a modern take of a traditional Solomon Islands Leaf House with high, pitched ceilings, genuine thatched roofs, woven walls and polished timber floors. Each stands a metre-or-so above the ground to assist natural cooling and each one has a veranda out over a private beach. The bathrooms are modern and fresh. Bungalows are solar powered with battery back-up ensuring lights and ceiling fans operate 24 hours.  To conserve the solar power, bungalows don’t have a fridge but guests are welcome to keep items cool in the restaurant kitchen fridges. Hot water in thermos flasks is delivered to bungalows each day so guests may enjoy tea/coffee in their bungalow. Mosquito nets are provided for Queen Beds.

The Lodge is almost like a second resort on the island, although it is certainly very much a part of the Sanbis Resort.  Built on a private point with a private jetty out front with a lovely thatched hut at the end, The Lodge comprises a main building over three split levels including a living/entertainment area with TV screen, Hi-Fi and wireless internet. A level lower houses a small kitchen and a dining area and on the ground level a lounge and a sun deck with BBQ facilities and a 6 person Spa bath leads out on to the private jetty. A fridge with ice maker is restocked daily. Two air-conditioned bungalows are joined off one side of the main house. There are 2 tariff options at The Lodge – one which includes the private use of a motor boat, the other excluding the exclusive-use boat.  We rate The Lodge at Sanbis Resort as one of best setup accommodation units in the Western Province.

Getting to and from Sanbis Resort
Easy!  Fly into Gizo Airport and it is only a 7 minute boat ride over the lagoon from the airport on Nusatupe Island to Sanbis Resort.  Arriving aircraft generally fly quite close to Sanbis Resort giving arriving guests a great view of the resort on the way in.  Nusatupe Island looks for all intents and purposes just like a huge aircraft carrier floating on the lagoon as the airstrip covers most of the island.

The boat transit time between Sanbis and Gizo town is approximately 12 minutes. It is an easy kayak paddle over to Nusatupe (Airport) Island at any time if guests decide to visit the interesting clam hatchery on “airport island”.

Kids Policy
Only young people aged 12 years and over are accommodated at Sanbis Resort.
