Sepo Island, A Private Islet off North Ghizo Island, Solomon Islands

"Ever dreamt of escaping to your own private island? Leave the rat race well and truly behind at Oravae Cottage – your own Robinson Crusoe style bungalow in the heart of the Pacific. Perched on the edge of an islet 20 minutes from the mainland, there’s nothing to distract you here but the gentle sound of waves.

Spend your days relaxing on the wooden verandah, swimming pristine lagoons, diving or snorkelling WWII Japanese war relics, feasting on traditional island banquets or sinking an ice-cold beer and watching the sun go down as the rest of the world becomes nonexistent.

Whether you’re after a romantic getaway for two or somewhere for a party of 10, Oravae is the perfect escape.

Our Thoughts on Oravae Cottage
Oravae is a very special place.  Throughout the South Pacific there are only a small number of places like Oravae Cottage where guests have exclusive use of an idyllic island location where the hosts are 100% focussed on your individual needs and where nothing else matters but your own personal comfort and enjoyment.  Most such places are, of necessity, in the high-price bracket – this is not the case at Oravae.  At Oravae, the accommodation is all built on traditional Solomon Islands lines from local materials, so it’s quite rustic but very comfortable at the same time. You get the feeling of being miles away from civilisation in a world of your own although Gizo Town is only a 20 minute boat ride away.  The property is for your exclusive use; that means if you are a couple travelling alone, you will be the only guests at Oravae – however, there is accommodation for up to 10 guests in 3 different buildings, so Oravae is ideal for a family group, 2 or 3 couples or a small group of friends to share.  The daily tariff is charged on a per person basis, irrespective of the number of people sharing and includes accommodation, 3 meals each day and return arrival and departure transfers between Oravae and either Gizo Town or Gizo Airport which is located on a separate island 5 minutes off-shore from Gizo Town.

The original cottage building is a real gem which sits on the lagoon front with an extensive veranda right over the lagoon.  You can tumble or slide off the veranda straight into the clear, warm waters of the lagoon to swim, snorkel or ride a lazy inflatable chair or air bed.  You can try “Skurfing” (stand on a surfboard and be towed by a speedboat) right off the cottage deck, tie your traditional wooden canoe to the veranda deck after exploring the islands or laze on your hammock to take in the superb sunrise and sunset.  Both The Penthouse and The Treehouse are suitable for couples.  The decks and verandas of these units are on raised platforms high above the lagoon which affords guests magnificent views of sunrise, sunset and Kolombangara Island.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all included in the daily tariff and these are delivered fresh to guests to enjoy in their own unit.

Apart from relaxing, swimming, snorkelling and enjoying the hospitality and surroundings, there are plenty of optional (paid) activities available at Oravae Cottage.
   Scuba diving with Dive Gizo
   Hiking Kolombangara Island
Ghizo Island Tour – visiting local villages and beaches
   Jungle walk
   Exploring the local islands
   Exploring WWII Relics

Oravae Cottage is a unique holiday option and well worth consideration for those people seeking a private, relaxing stay in an environment where you are totally in control of who you share your space with (if anybody!).  Have an exclusive holiday with your own family, your own friends or simply enjoy the sole-use and enjoyment of this wonderful environment at a reasonable cost, secure in the knowledge that you are the only guests for the duration of your stay.

Your Accommodation Options
The original Oravae Cottage has recently been joined by 2 other accommodation units – both nearby.  This means that Oravae can now accommodate up to a total of 10 guests.  However, only one party, irrespective of the number of guests, is accommodated at Oravae at any one time.

All three accommodation units are built of a natural, local timber and leaf construction along traditional Solomon Islands lines with high, thatched roof and timber plank flooring.  Glass louvres, insect nets over the beds and spacious verandas complete the picture. Units are cooled by natural flow-through ventilation from the sea breezes.

Accommodation units include an over-water veranda, use of a traditional canoe, all linen and towels, cutlery and kitchen supplies, tea and coffee, use of a selection of inflatables, gas lighting, fridge and stove.
