Our Resort Report

Our thoughts on Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa, Ka'anapali Beach, Maui, Hawaii
This is another special place to stay on Maui. The location is superb as it’s right at the northern end of Ka’anapali Beach where the beach is widest and where the Ka’anapali Beach Walk meets Black Rock. Guests at Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa have ready access to the marvellous snorkelling around the base of Black Rock with the chance to see turtles, a large number of tropical fish and colourful corals as well as having a grandstand view of the evening Cliff-Dive Ceremony held every day at sundown.

Complementing the 2018 full renovation of all the guest rooms and suites, in January 2020, the resort unveiled a multi-million-dollar transformation of its lobby, including an expansive open-air lanai (balcony) which features plush sofas and rocking chairs and the introduction of Kaanapali’s only lobby bar. On the lower lobby level, the resort has opened a family game room where guests of all ages can surf the internet, watch movies, or challenge an opponent to a round of foosball or shuffleboard. A cozy outdoor area offers corn hole games and teepees for children to play in.

We are always impressed with how quiet, relaxing and romantic it is here.  Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa has managed to produce an atmosphere where singles, couples and families can all enjoy their own space.  Even when the resort is full, there never seems to be any difficulty securing a sun-lounger near a pool. There is a separate kids’ pool, a very well equipped Fitness Centre a marvellous Spa and a whole range of restaurants and bars – even a Starbucks Coffee outlet. For a little indulgence hire yourself a beach cabana for a half day (or full day) of total bliss or wander down the Beach Walk beachfront path and you are only 5-10 minutes from Whalers Village with all its shops, restaurants, bars and galleries.

For guests wanting to participate in resort activities, there is an extensive daily activity program on offer.

It’s not a bad idea to rent a car for at least part of the time spent on Maui and if you do, self-parking is included in the daily Resort Charge.  However, in this location, you can have a super holiday without having a car at all, just lay back and enjoy the ambience and the facilities provided, but if you do need to explore, the complimentary shuttle provided will take you to Front Street Lahaina and Lahaina Cannery Mall calling at the other Starwood Group Resorts on the way.

What Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa Say About Themselves
The Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa is the premier location for a dream Hawaiian vacation. Situated on Ka’anapali Beach, the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa is the most romantic escape in all the Hawaiian Islands… the dramatic point at which the legendary Black Rock of Ka’anapali meets the ocean. Anchored by the Black Rock itself, this spectacular Maui hotel beckons hopeless romantics, discerning honeymooners, and fun-seeking families.

Privately nestled at historic Black Rock promontory, Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa’s 23 oceanfront acres flow gracefully from the crest of Pu`u Keka`a to the shores of Ka`anapali Beach. The hotel is part of the Ka`anapali Beach Resort community, including Ka`anapali Golf Courses and Whaler’s Village Shops and Restaurants.

Almost all of our 508 rooms and suites directly face the Pacific, with a private lanai for contemplating the view. Inside, the craftsmanship of old Hawai'i reveals itself in lamps of bamboo design, patterns recalling block prints on kapa, and rattan chairs drawing on the peacock shapes of ancient thrones. Our unique 'Ohana (Family) Suites encompass two spacious and adaptable rooms. And at the pinnacle of Pu'u Keka'a, an atmosphere of exclusivity reigns. On the highest level rises the Ali'i Suite, surrounding you with prized artwork, from authentic koa bowls and drums to original Matson menu covers from the 1930s whose images have defined Hawai'i for generations.

Dining options at The Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa are as rich and varied as the hues in a Ka’anapali sunset. Here you’ll find international favorites, contemporary Hawaiian creations, and exceptional fine dining menus. With sweeping coastal views and a delightful menu of island-influenced creations, the ROCKsalt Terrace is the perfect choice for casual dining and ROCKsalt for contemporary dining. East and West culinary delights combine at Teppan-yaki Dan, where guests will enjoy a fusion of delicious culinary traditions, as master chefs prepare originally inspired dishes at your table. And for cool tropical drinks, light menus and lilting slack-key guitar, try The Cliff Dive Bar, follow the garden paths to the Mai Tai Bar, or let the trade winds carry you to the Link @ Sheraton Lounge.

Experience Sheraton Maui's own luau. Located beachfront on Ka’anapali Beach, the Ka'anapali Sunset Luau at Black Rock shares the music, dance, and history of the islands right here at the foot of the famous cliff diving point, Black Rock.

The Spa at Black Rock occupies the entire first floor of the Hale Nalu (building 4) and features indoor and outdoor secluded relaxation areas and seven luxurious treatment rooms available for massages, body treatments, facials, skin enhancements, manicures and pedicures.

All products at the Spa at Black Rock focus on the rejuvenating qualities of the sea. Each product combines natural ocean plants, minerals and water with the essence oils of Polynesia to create a truly authentic tropical spa experience. A line of exclusively designed Black Rock Spa products is available for purchase if you would like to recreate the experience at home. Signature treatments of the Spa at Black Rock include the Pu’u Keka’a Stone Massage, the Papaya Shea Wrap, Balancing Island Facial and the Sole Smoothie Foot Massage with Pineapple, Coconut and Papaya enzymes.

Enjoy the Daily Cliff Dive Ceremony. As the sun begins its slow dive into the ocean, torch lighting signals the nightly ritual of Lele Kawa (cliff diving). Legend tells us the last chief of Maui, Kahekili (Thunderer), proved his spiritual strength by leaping from sacred Pu’u Keka’a to the Pacific. With sunset painting the sky, a young cliff diver honors his heritage each evening by re-tracing footsteps in the sand on Kaanapali Beach. A chant of old Hawai'i begins the progression of our warrior; the echo of the conch shell announces his arrival. He leaves a trail of glowing torches surrounding the lagoon as he makes his way to Black Rock. Upon reaching the summit, he offers his torch to the ocean below, casts his flower lei into the sea; and finally takes the breathtaking dive from Black Rock into the rolling surf below.”

Your Accommodation Options
Each accommodation block is given a special Hawaiian name which describes its location on the resort as well as the name “Hale” (house). There are two distinctly different sections to this property; firstly, the flat area beside the beach and secondly, the area on top of the Black Rock promontory which marks the northern end of Ka’anapali Beach proper. The Resort lobby, restaurants, bars, meeting rooms and swimming pools are all located in the centre of the flat beachfront area.  This central resort facility is flanked by hotel accommodation blocks which house the Resort View Rooms, the Partial Ocean View Rooms, the Ocean View Rooms, the Ocean Front Rooms and the Deluxe Ocean View Rooms, as well as the 1 bedroom Family Suites and the 1 bedroom Junior Suites.  The blocks on the top of Black Rock (known as blocks 5 and 6) house the Deluxe Ocean Front Rooms. None of the accommodation blocks is higher than 6 floors and all multi-storied blocks have lift access.
