Our Resort Report

OUR thoughts on Musket Cove Island Resort & Marina, Malolo Lailai, Mamanuca Islands, Fiji
We would sum up Musket Cove as having "something for everyone". It ticks all the boxes for a tropical island holiday - great beaches, a colourful tropical landscape, wide accommodation options including authentic-style bure accommodation, hotel-style rooms, absolute waterfront bungalows with overwater balconies or modern 2-bedroom townhouse-style garden villas.  Recently additions include the 10 individual rooms in the refurbished adults-only Colonial-style “Raintree House” which adds a cheaper accommodation option but still only brings the total accommodation units up to 57. Add to this an island-style spa, restaurants and bars and even a very well stocked convenience store, but what makes Musket Cove Resort special and different is the International Marina and Yacht Club which is integrated into the arrival/departure point of the resort right on its doorstep. “The Trader” and the “Coffee Cove” are the link between the Marina and the Resort. The famous Ratu Nemani Island Bar on the first of the two linked small islands which shelter the marina is a relaxed sand-between-the-toes type of place where resort guests happily mingle with locals and cruising yachties.

Ratu Nemani Island Bar is much more than just another tropical bar.  Beside the bar on the seaward side of the little island, there is a beautiful little sandy cove for guests to enjoy and within the open building on the side facing back towards the resort, several BBQs are available for guests to use and BBQ Packs are available at The Coffee Cove Cafe. This little island is a delight at any time of the day but is especially beautiful in the evenings as the sun sets and the resort lights come on. The second small island, “Smiths Island” is the northern point of the resort and is a favourite spot for weddings and picnics.

Following the ongoing improvements made at Musket Cove Resort over recent years, which included the grand opening of The Marama Room, Musket Cove's boutique conference and function room and The Resort's lovely Makare Wellness Spa, early 2015 saw another huge improvement at Musket Cove – the opening of their new "Trader House" central facility fronting the landing where the “Malolo Cat” transfer boats arrive and depart housing not only the Arrival Pavilion but the pleasant Marinas Edge Cafe, The Resort's Boutique and Shop as well as an expanded “Trader” market store etc. This new addition has added significantly to Musket Cove’s facilities and appeal. 2017 saw the complete renovation and renewal of the Island Villas and the Beach Bures and early 2018 saw the complete upgrade of the pool area (which includes the addition of private pool-side cabanas), the lounge and Bistro.

"The Trader" Musket Cove's convenience store offers a complete range of groceries etc for those who either wish to cook a full meal in their villa, make use of the resort barbeques to cook up a personal meal or simply prepare a snack in their Bure. Fresh fruit and vegetables are stocked daily, fresh bread, milk and eggs are also available. There is a good selection of cheese, yoghurt, meat, chicken and frozen foods, canned products, chocolate, sweets, ice creams, ice blocks and cold drinks as well as general basic necessities; flour, sugar etc. Cakes, cookies and specialty items are baked daily in the bakery. The Trader is open daily from 8:00am to 7:00pm.

There is a range of dining options at Musket Cove and the food receives good reviews from guests.  Dick's Place Bar & Bistro, is the main restaurant.  Dick’s Place occupies a beautiful, plantation-style building where guests may either dine indoors or out on the wide veranda beside the pool (where the excellent buffet breakfast is served daily) or out around the nice big horizon swimming pool on the extensive pool deck under the big trees which are part of the deck. The new Marinas Edge Café is a great spot for a lazy coffee as well as light meals, a beachside coffee, a snack, or ice-cream. The Activities Bure is not just for water-based activities, they also have a stock of bicycles for hire and these are in high demand as Malolo Lailai Island is quite flat and very bicycle-friendly - indeed many of the staff ride bicycles as they go about their daily routine, to and from work.

Don't overlook "The Pier", a great place for a romantic personal evening of private dining for 2 to 6 people. Dine right at the end of the pier in a really romantic moonlight setting. Musket Cove has several meal plan options - Our Specialists have full details.

Musket Cove Island Resort shares Malolo Lailai Island with 2 other resorts - Plantation Island Resort and Lomani Resort. Musket Cove’s guests can easily wander around the end of the small airport runway to Ananda’s Restaurant which is just on the other side of the airport and further, away on the far side of Plantation Island Resort, Lomani Resort’s restaurant is also worth a look. As Malolo Lailai is a sizeable island, there is still a majority of the island in its natural condition and you are welcome to explore.  A favourite activity of ours is to wander down to the far end of the small runway and turn left on to South Beach where the snorkelling is great.  South Beach is often deserted, so if you are seeking a beach to yourself, this could well be the place for you.

Musket Cove is a great spot for weddings and honeymoons. There is an extensive range of wonderful wedding locations to suit all tastes and sizes of weddings. Imagine an intimate ceremony on the pier or on Smiths Island overlooking the bay, or, for bigger parties consider the options of a wedding right on a beautiful Malolo Lailai Beach or for a slightly more formal venue, the picturesque Wedding Chapel located on the hill overlooking The Marina.

Musket Cove is full of very pleasant surprises and one of these is the standard of their shopping boutique.  For a resort of this size, the offerings in their boutique are marvellous – great resort wear, souvenirs and sundries.

Accommodation rates at Musket Cove include:
●  Full American Buffet Breakfast daily
●  Arrival coconut water and chilled scented towels
●  Handmade Clay Bead Necklace
●  Use of kayaks, windsurfing and snorkelling gear
●  Daily snorkelling trip
●  Guided island organic farm and medicine walks
●  Secluded beach visits
●  Volleyball

What Musket Cove Island Resort Say About Themselves

Crystal clear azure water stretching as far as the eye can see. Idyllic snorkelling and scuba diving where you can discover an abundance of tropical fish and colourful coral reef backdrop. Day cruises, fishing and Island hops allow you to experience the unique Mamanuca group of islands. World class Mandara Spa, complete with indulgent treatments, massages and relaxed surroundings. Swaying coconut palms, sweetly perfumed frangipanis and 12 kilometres of untouched beaches. Warm sunshine, Fijian hospitality and culture. Over 100 friendly, Fijian staff, ready to welcome you to our island.

Located on Malolo Lailai in the picturesque Mamanuca Islands of Fiji, Musket Cove Island Resort is the perfect location for your Fijian escape. With romantic Beachfront bures perfect for honeymoon couples, Villas for families or groups and Large Garden Bures for those wishing to experience the island lifestyle – our extensive range of accommodation suits every traveller's needs.

Fijian in style and cuisine, Dick's Place Bar & Bistro is at the heart of the Resort. Our comfy duck-board chairs, ship’s propeller tables, fish trap lights, coconut beams and indigenous artwork for fun island setting. We believe that one of the best ways to discover a culture is through food so we've designed a menu to give you a taste of Fiji. We have created dishes inspired by our organic farm and produce grown on the island with a mix of more traditional Fijian flavours added to the line-up. The menu features healthy alternatives ideal for the tropical Island climate with a Fijian twist to suit all palettes.

Explore your favourite dishes with our A La Carte menu and discover the Fijian style of cuisine with options like the Levuka Tuna Nicoise Salad featuring Vudi (pronounced ‘Vundi') a Fijian plantain and greens produced on the Island or traditional Fijian Lolo buns with homemade pawpaw and ginger jam for breakfast or for dinner a pan seared pacific cod featuring Malolo Lailai heart of palm and passion fruit butter.

Combined with Musket's legendary theme nights which cover some of the local cultures such as Indian and Chinese, the menu delivers an endless variety of dining options. Each night we set up for dinner on the deck around the pool, unless of course the weather does not permit (which is rare). Try one of our delicious cocktails, made with fresh fruit or coconut water or ask our “mixologist” to make you something special. We also offer a full wine list and an excellent selection of local and imported spirits and beers.

Fiji's Musket Cove Island Resort and Marina is a true South Pacific paradise, ideal for a destination wedding, romantic honeymoon or just an escape.

Your Bure and Villa Options
Musket Cove originally comprised the original Dick’s Place central facility plus 2 rows of thatched Fijian-style studio Garden Bures built amongst the palm trees facing on to a lovely open village-style lawn which leads to the beach.  More recent bure additions have been a row of beach frontage bures to the north of the hotel's main building and many upgrades later, these bures are still there in their original locations facing the beach. Later additions include 6 large 1 bedroom Lagoon Bures built beside a small lagoon close to the main hotel building. The Lagoon bures have large balcony decks which extend out over the lagoon. Nearby, facing on to another wide lawn there are modern 2 bedroom/2 bathroom Garden Villas and the most recent additions are the nearby Island Villas which sit in splendour on a private Island in the cove. Recently refurbished with brand new bathrooms with rain showers, new bamboo flooring, LED lighting throughout and a new central pool, spa and BBQ area, providing affordable luxury on your own private island with its own swimming pool and BBQ area. The Island is accessed by a short over-water walkway from the main resort. Island Villas have 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and feature nice big individual floating pontoons off the front of each veranda.

Wifi is free at Dicks Place Bistro, Trader Café and in Villas.  There is a charge for Wifi access in Bures.

On our regular visits to Musket Cove, we are always impressed with the constant upgrading being done to the Bures and Villas.  Currently, all the bathrooms are being progressively upgraded and modernised as hotel occupancy allows.

Musket Cove Island Resort also has a good selection of 2, 3-or 4-bedroom homes available.  The tropics-inspired homes are generally located on the hill behind The Resort.  Many have private pools and most have spectacular views from their wide decks and verandas. Our Specialists can provide prices and availability.

Room Categories (in ascending order of tariff)
Bullet Raintree Rooms:
Located in a large two-level “Queenslander-style” building tucked into the lee of the hill behind the resort’s central facility and known as “Raintree House”. All 10 of the 30m2 hotel-style rooms are modern and fresh with polished timber floors and light-coloured interior walls.  Each ground floor room opens directly out on to a pleasant little patio which leads to an expansive lawn between Raintree House and the resort’s main restaurant and pool and from which it is only steps to the beach.
The upstairs rooms (walk-up) all share a common wrap-around veranda and the individual rooms open directly on to the veranda.  All rooms are air-conditioned and individual bathrooms have a shower.
Maximum Occupancy: 3 Adults (Minimum age 12 years)
Existing Bedding:  1 King Bed and 1 Single Day Bed
Additional Bedding:  No additional bedding accommodated

Bullet Garden Bures:
The main row of Garden Bures is set back from the beachside lawn and many have a filtered view of the ocean.  The second row of Garden Bures is located on the hill behind and each of these bures is accessed by 10-12 concrete steps up the hill.  These bures are sheltered under old tropical trees and offer an outlook over and between the front row of Garden Bures to the ocean.  Sunset views are magnificent from the verandas of all the Garden Bures. Garden Bures are the original bures at Musket Cove but still offer a very pleasant air-conditioned interior, a nice light painted décor with very tasteful Fijian touches. Bures have a vaulted ceiling. The surprisingly large interior space may be divided into bedroom and lounge areas by closing modern, white-painted, 2.5-metre-high timber sliding screens. The wide outdoor veranda-patio has an outdoor table setting for 4 and there are 2 sun loungers out front on the lawn.  Inside, a feature is the handy little breakfast bar which comes complete with a mini fridge, toaster, tea/coffee making facilities, cookie-jar, cutlery and crockery. The big bathroom has a shower and separate toilet.
Maximum Occupancy: 2 Adults and 2 Children aged up to 12 years or 3 Adults
Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed plus 2 Single Divan/Day Beds in the lounge area
Additional Bedding:  No additional bedding is accommodated

Bullet Lagoon Bures:
Built beside and partially over an inland lagoon, the 6 large air-conditioned Lagoon Bures are located in a quiet area right in the centre of the resort.  The layout makes them ideal for couples seeking space and families with kids aged 15 or over. The King Bed is at the back of the bure and can be screened off by sliding doors.  The nice big lounge area which runs out to the large overwater deck includes a breakfast bar with a fridge, toaster, tea/coffee making facility, cutlery and crockery. The big bathroom has a walk-in shower.
Maximum Occupancy: 2 Adults and 2 Children aged 10 to 12 years years or 4 Adults
Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed in the sleeping area and 1 Single Bed in the lounge area.
Additional Bedding: There is a Day Bed in the lounge area which can sleep the fourth occupant of the bure.

Bullet Beach Bures:
Refurbished and updated in 2017, Beach Bures, located in a row facing the beach in a stepped-back zig-zag pattern for guest privacy, are one of Musket Cove’s adults-only accommodation types. All bures face the beachfront and the remarkable tropical sunsets. All Beach Bures are air-conditioned and very spacious at 60m2 in size with a pleasantly modern/authentic Fijian-style about them. Beach Bures feel like suites, and although the bedroom and the living area are not entirely separate, they certainly feel special with their furnished patio facing the beach, their breakfast bar and spacious living area. The breakfast bar is equipped with a fridge, toaster, tea/coffee making facility, cutlery and crockery. The big bathroom has a walk-in shower. Located only steps from the beach, but far enough back to ensure privacy from the beachfront path, every Beach Bure has a hammock slung out front in the garden/lawn area.
Maximum Occupancy: 3 Adults (Minimum age 12 years)
Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed
Additional Bedding:  The day Bed in the lounge area can be converted to a Single Bed.

Bullet Garden Villas (2 Bedroom):
An excellent option for a family or 2 couples travelling together. The 6 air-conditioned Garden Villas offer Townhouse-style accommodation with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (each with shower). There is a cosy lounge and an enormous semi-walled balcony which has a 6-seater outdoor dining setting and a spa bath. The kitchenette has a mid-size fridge, microwave oven and cook-top, toaster, tea and coffee facilities, crockery and cutlery.
Maximum Occupancy: 5 guests
Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed in one bedroom, 1 King Bed and a Single Bed or 3 Single Beds in the second bedroom.
Additional Bedding: No additional bedding accommodated.

Bullet Island Villas (2 Bedroom):
Large, modern light and airy villas with spacious lounge. Ideal for 2 couples travelling together or families, each Island Villa features 2 identical air-conditioned bedrooms, both with an ensuite bathroom (with shower), a kitchen, large overwater deck and private pontoon. Island Villas give occupants the impression of an overwater bungalow as the deck area encroaches out over the water of the surrounding lagoon. The galley kitchen has a mid-size fridge, microwave oven and cook-top, toaster, tea and coffee facilities, crockery and cutlery.
During the first quarter of 2017 all Island Villas were fully refurbished. The refurbishment included new, modern, crisp bathrooms, LED lighting throughout, new bamboo flooring and more.  In addition to the villas themselves, the private central pool area has also been upgraded with a new pool, spa, water feature and the addition of poolside cabanas and BBQ area.
Due to the “overwater” nature of the Island Villas, children aged between 5 and 15 years will only be accepted to stay in Island Villas subject to special conditions and the signing of a waiver form prior to the booking being accepted by the resort. Children under 5 years are not permitted in Island Bures.
Maximum Occupancy: 4 guests
Existing Bedding: There is a King Bed in both bedrooms, one of which can be split into Single Beds giving options of 2 King Beds or 1 King and 2 Singles
Additional Bedding: No additional bedding accommodated.
