Our Resort Report

OUR thoughts on Matamanoa Island Resort, Matamanoa Island, Mamanuca Islands
It is hard to imagine a more perfect setup for a magical island holiday than Matamanoa. The island itself is a perfect size – not too small and not too big, just right. Matamanoa Island Resort is the only occupant of the island and takes up around 30% of the beach space on the island; the remainder is in its natural condition. The hill behind the resort buildings offers a magnificent vista of the myriad of islands making up the Mamanuca and Yasawa Groups as well as Fiji’s main island (Viti Levu) in the distance. If you can make an early start to your day and catch the sunrise from the top of the hill you will be rewarded with an unforgettable sight. The resort’s Spa is located on the hill. Just take a gentle walk up a boardwalk behind the tennis court and you come to the Veidomoni Spa with its fabulous view and wonderful, relaxing Spa treatments and massages.

The resort has a lovely pool which is on the beachfront out front of the restaurant, lounge and bar where the beach is widest and where the opening in the surrounding coral garden and reef allows the transfer boats to approach the resort. Matamanoa, being an adults-only resort year-round, offers an intimate atmosphere for guests with options to join in and let your hair down without the kids frowning on the side-lines, or chilling out away from the guest activities as they see fit. During the day there are plenty of activities to enjoy such as a mountain hike, sulu tying demonstration, coconut husking & cracking demonstration, green coconut tasting, Fijian language lesson, weaving lessons, Fijian cooking lesson, snorkelling lessons, beach petanque, coconut bowling, beach cricket, beach soccer, beach touch rugby, tennis court, table tennis, canoeing, paddle boats, row boats, Hobie-cats, snorkelling equipment, board games and library and these are only the complimentary options, there's a wide range of paid, optional activities too.

Most nights after dinner, there is some sort of activity organised which is great for those in the mood to maybe be ‘a little silly’ (the Mr Matamanoa Contest springs to mind), but there is also plenty of space for those guests only wanting quiet after-dinner relaxation over a cocktail or two.

Small group bookings and whole-of-island buy-out will be considered on application.

Matamanoa is a perfect spot for a wedding (they have a Wedding Co-ordinator on staff) It’s a great place for a honeymoon or for celebrating an anniversary. For anyone looking for an extra special treat, Matamanoa offers the option of a “Romantic Dinner for 2” – a very special 4 course meal with Lobster option and we are happy to pre-book this for you.

The most appealing qualities of Matamanoa are firstly, the perfect fit of the resort with the size and natural attributes of this beautiful private island. Secondly the feeling you get staying here that you are never under pressure to keep adding to your room account to be able to fully enjoy your holiday. Take, for example, the long list of complimentary activities, the fact that the daily breakfast which is included in the tariff, includes a magnificent array of goodies, such as Pancakes & Maple Syrup, Croissants, Danish Pastries and muffins to compliment the Full American Breakfast included in the tariff, and the little added bonuses like the complimentary Veidomoni Spa Voucher for a 10-minute foot ritual, a shell lei, welcome drink and cold towels on arrival and after-dinner entertainment.  (The complimentary daily afternoon tea has been descontinued).

For us, the most important and impressive attributes of Matamanoa Island Resort are the perfect resort size (maximum just on 100 guests) for a high-quality resort experience, the relaxed professionalism of all the staff and the high standards of the facilities and services on offer.

Matamanoa's Dive Operator - Deep Blue, is now a PADI Course Director. This is the highest level of PADI Instructor there is and the only active one in Fiji.

What Matamanoa Island Resort Say About Themselves:
"Matamanoa Island is an intimate and secluded, adults only Fijian Resort.  We are set in the beautiful Mamanuca Islands approximately 30 kilometers west of Nadi International Airport - experience a true gift of nature.

The Island boasts a volcanic cone jutting out of the azure waters of this unspoiled marine sanctuary. Clad with native bush and palm trees, the brilliance of the vegetation contrasts magnificently with the white curved sandy beaches and pristine coral reefs. Combined with nature, we have created a haven for those who want to relinquish the pressures of a busy lifestyle. This is for those who dream of peace and tranquility.

To achieve this special atmosphere, Matamanoa Island Resort has adopted a year round policy of not permitting day-trippers or children under the age of 16 years.

Matamanoa allows you complete days of rest or a wide range of leisure activities and cultural excursions: swim in the infinity pool and soak up the vistas; or snorkel in the beautiful Pacific Ocean; try your hand at tennis or sip a long cocktail at the bar as you watch the sun set; experience the treetop spa, Senaki, and be massaged with the scent of exotic aroma oils, a truly heavenly experience.  Discover the magic of this beautiful Island and make new memories.”

Our Note re Upgades:
Bures and Rooms
A wide-ranging upgrade of facilities was completed in 2015. The upgrade to the interior of the Beachfront Bures involved a makeover of walls, all furniture and bathroom tiles.  A wet bar was added as well as a desk and chair, a three-seat couch, a chair and an occasional table.  New doors have new curtains opening out to the deck and shutters have been added to all windows.  The gorgeous tapa-lined ceilings are still a feature of the Bures.

The outdoor features of each Bure have also been enhanced with the installation of a private plunge pool and a gazebo with day Bed, an outdoor shower and new outdoor furniture. Gazebos have been positioned so that guests enjoying their deck and plunge pool are totally private from the plunge pool and deck of the next door Bure.

Other improvements include extensions to the roof over the decking of the Resort Rooms and new outdoor furniture.  A new Chiefly Bure replaced the small boat waiting bure on the front of South Beach which involved the conversion of the Beachfront Bure closest to the central facility into a new front office and resort boutique.

Central Facility

From early January to the end of April 2018, Matamanoa closed for a complete renewal of the central facility including the whole front of house including bar, restaurant, former reception and boutique (now a lounge area) pool surrounds, pool, deck, arrival bure, steps etc into one huge open space and redeveloped for out-of-sun relaxation with comfortable state-of-the-art furnishings and a large TV (for sports fans).

We are advised
“The Bar and Restaurant are now fitted with very large European Tiles with two inlays of hexagonal tiles in the Restaurant.  Custom-designed and built in New Zealand, the new Bar features new Bar Lounge furniture for both Restaurant & Bar, Rattan couches and comfy occasional set ups in the bar, Bench seating in the form of movable rattan couches in the Restaurant, plus tables for two with large back rattan armchairs.  Colours are muted and neutrals.  Interior ceiling lining, dinnerware, cutlery, glassware and other accessories.

Around the Pool and on the Deck, all existing pavers and the old wooden deck have been removed and replaced by beautiful natural stone which sets the stage around the Pool area and on the Deck which are enhanced with new poolside furniture, rattan loungers, day beds, beach lounges and outdoor bean bags and occasional tables. At the side of the Pool on the left looking out to the Ocean, is a sunken seating area with fire pit.  New Pool underwater lighting and tile interior, a beautiful natural textured tile to match the natural stone of the Pool surrounds. Large hanging Chair.”

All-in-all these changes and enhancements produce a welcome new dimension to Matamanoa Island Resort.  Matamanoa has always delivered a very pleasant holiday experience and is now even better with these exciting improvements.

The Resort Rooms are located in a single-level ribbon building in the gardens behind the Beachfront Bures to the left of the restaurant/pool complex as you arrive at the resort with no view of the beach/ocean. Each is 26m2 in size. The whole block has been completely refurbished in recent years and vastly improved with new, high-pitched ceiling with light tapa-style ceiling decoration and additional high windows. The bathrooms are modern and bright. Amenities include a refrigerator, tea/coffee making facilities, coffee plunger, clock/radio, small patio with daybed. Ensuite bathroom, single vanity and Caesar stone bench, European fittings and Italian tiles – hair dryer and bathrobe. The Resort Room Decks are fully covered with a nice new veranda roof and new outdoor furniture has been added.
Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed which can be split into 2 single beds.
Maximum Occupancy: 2 guests.
Additional Bedding:  No additional bedding accommodated.

Bullet Beachfront Bures:
Each with a private plunge pool.
The Beachfront Bures at Matamanoa Island Resort are big, beautiful, stand-alone bures located in a semi-circle on the beach frontage either side of the restaurant/pool complex. There is often a debate over which side of the restaurant is preferable as one side faces the south-west (known as the Sunset-side) and the other faces south-east (the so-called Sunrise-side). We don’t think it really matters which side you are allocated as all Bures are beautifully located and offer wonderful space and facilities. All Beachfront Bures have a private plunge pool and a gazebo with day bed out front and new outdoor furniture.  An outdoor shower compliments the indoor shower. The gazebos are positioned so that guests in each Bure enjoy their deck and plunge pool in privacy.
Each bure is 54m2 in area and are a pleasant fusion of traditional Fiji design with high ceilings lined with hand-painted tapa and modern ceramic floor tiles and light-painted walls. There are timber louvered windows throughout and glass sliding doors open to a covered patio veranda facing the beach and the sea. While each bure is open-plan there are well defined sleeping and living areas usually on the same level. Facilities include a wet bar with a sink, under-counter refrigerator, tea/coffee making facilities, coffee plunger, clock/radio, coffee table, chair, personal safe plus patio with hammock and outdoor table and two chairs.
The ensuite bathroom has twin vanities, granite bench, state of-the-art fittings, Italian tiles, hair drier, bathrobes & high class amenities.
Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed.
Maximum Occupancy: 3 adults
Additional Bedding: The 3rd guest is accommodated on a fold-out sofa bed in the lounge area.

Bullet Beachfront Villas:
Each with a private plunge pool.
Located on the private North Beach, access is via a purpose built walkway or chauffeured golf cart. The 10 new Beachfront Villas at Matamanoa Island Resort add another dimension to the accommodation options.  Each Villa is a large 50m2 (excluding the gazebo and covered deck) and while it is open-plan the bedroom and the lounge are defined by the lounge being down 4 steps from the bedroom area.  This provides 2-room ambience without compromising the feeling of openness and space and gives a view of the ocean from both the upper sleeping area and the lower lounge area. Villas are air-conditioned and have a ceiling fan.
Bathrooms in the Beachfront Villas have twin vanities, separate shower and separate toilet. To add to the “South Pacific” theme the villas also include a private walled outdoor courtyard garden which features a tropical outdoor shower. The lounge room has a mini bar and iPod dock. The big (14.4m2) covered veranda deck boarders an individual plunge pool. A separate 4m2 thatched gazebo comes complete with a double day bed
Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed.
Maximum Occupancy: 3 adults
Additional Bedding: The 3rd guest is accommodated on a fold-out sofa bed in the lounge area.
