Our Resort Report

OUR Thoughts on Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort Fiji, Savusavu, Vanua Levu, Fiji
Savusavu Bay is a beautiful part of Fiji’s “Second Island” Vanua Levu just 20 minutes or so by road from Savusavu Airport.  The bay is formed on the south-eastern side by a long peninsular of land which separates the Bay from the Koro Sea and the tip of this peninsular is the location of the impressive Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort.  The Resort generally fronts a north-facing sandy beach where the resort jetty extends out into the calm bay but there are also some spectacular Bures located above the reef on the point itself.

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is a high-quality resort which has been built and operates on the basis of being “environmentally responsible” (you would expect nothing less from a Resort bearing the Cousteau name) while producing a genuinely up-scale holiday experience. Over the past couple of years, the resort has undergone an improvement program which has kept it right up there as one of the highest quality resorts in Fiji.

In New Zealand, this Resort is probably best known for its remarkable “family-friendly” environment.  In our opinion, Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is a perfect choice for a family break – just take a look at the “Families and Kids” section below to understand why we rate it so highly for a family holiday.  However, this Resort is way, way more than just a place for families.

While families are welcome all year, Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort handles children so well, that apart from School Holiday periods other guests are not greatly impacted by children.  Apart from the amazing Bula Club kids’ facility with its dedicated nannies and buddies program and the kids’ dining arrangements, there is an “adults-only” Serenity Swimming Pool and an Adult Dining Area and one accommodation type (The Villa) in which children are only accepted on a request basis.  These arrangements make Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort a perfect choice for weddings, honeymoons, couples and dive holidays. Honeymooners, irrespective of any Honeymoon Special, receive a complimentary cocktail and Hors d’Oeuvres at sunset for 2 adults on each evening of guest’s stay.

Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Resort prices reflect the high standard of the resort facilities and the vast range of inclusions in the nightly tariff.  The Stay/Pay Specials (see below) add considerable value.

Quoting the resort
“Meals are taken either in an ocean-view, open-air dining bure with an 18 metre high temple roof, or poolside, or on one of the Ocean Terraces. Described as the “Best Food in Fiji” (Travel + Leisure), the executive chef prepares menus that incorporate a blend of contemporary Fijian, South Pacific and international cuisine that is complemented by an extensive selection of fine wines. Overlooking the pool and ocean beyond, the bar serves traditional and exotic beverages and cocktails for all tastes. For a romantic dining experience, the resort offers an adults-only dining area, dining by lantern light at the pier’s end, or a private meal in one of the thatched beach bures or on a romantic deck.”

As is often the case, it’s the little extra services that give a resort its high ranking as a holiday destination and Jean-Michel Cousteau is no exception.  Stand-outs for us are dining by lantern light at the end of the pier, the “Pillow Library” where guests choose the perfect pillow, the Savusavu Farmers Market trip, the daily yoga classes, the “Bula Club” for kids, the “Bobo” Massage in the beach Spa  – to name but a few.

Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort is an exceptionally popular resort and bookings, (especially for the June to October period) should be made well in advance.

Your Accommodation Options
Reminiscent of a Fijian village, the resort features 24 individual 1 and 2 bedroom Bures plus 1 amazing unit “The Villa”, nestled among the elegant palm trees just steps from the beach and sea. All accommodation has been refurbished recently to retain the high standards Jean-Michel Cousteau Resorts demand. The refurbishment includes a fresh new design and colour scheme giving them a new yet still authentic ambience. Make no mistake, this is very good accommodation indeed.

All bures are designed for the tropical environment and are well insulated.  Each one is constructed of local hardwood timbers, have Chiefly Bure-style high temple ceilings and non-endangered vegetation thatched roofs. The spacious bures offer contemporary décor with polished wooden floor, multiple overhead fans, a standing fan, writing desk, bath robes,  mini-bar  stocked with complimentary non-alcoholic bottled beverages, juices  'French press' coffee maker, specialty coffee and teas, wardrobes, safe, hairdryer, natural “Pure Fiji”  toiletries, iron & ironing board and complimentary Wifi.

Apart from The Villa there are no telephones or televisions in any of the Bures, which adds to the serenity of the indoor environment. The bures are elevated to take advantage of the sea breezes and views and are naturally ventilated with hardwood timber louvre-screened full-length windows front & back.  The bathroom with its Italian tile surfaces offers a large double vanity with generous storage space and a separate shower. Bathrooms can also be accessed directly from the outside deck.

Minimum Stay Policy

Big and beautiful.  The Point Reef Bures are located right on the point at The Resort and provide magical ocean views from all aspects. The Bedroom and the bathroom are located on a higher level – the sizeable lounge is down 4 steps from the bedroom and contains 2 single Day Bed couches as well as a bar in the living area. Decks run seamlessly off both the sleeping and the living areas and the lower level has an outdoor dining setting as well as sun-loungers.

Bullet The Honeymoon Point Reef Bure with Spa Tub:
Secluded and romantic. The Honeymoon Point Reef Bure with Spa Tub is tucked away in a secluded spot on the point, secluded but still providing wonderful ocean views. Similar in layout and facilities to the Point Reef Bures, the main difference is the hot spa tub located on the raised part of the deck outside the sleeping area.
There is 1 sizeable bathroom with shower.
Maximum Occupancy: 5 guests (adults or adults and children)
Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed on the upper level and 2 Single Day Beds on the lower level.
Additional Bedding: 1 Single Rollaway Bed can be added on the lower level

Deluxe Oceanfront 2 Bedroom Bures differ from their Oceanfront 2 Bedroom Bure counterparts in that they have a bigger separate bedroom which has private direct access to both the deck and the bathroom. The deck holds a hammock as well as lounging furniture.
There is one big bathroom with shower.
Maximum Occupancy: 6 guests (adults or adults and children)
Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed and 1 Single Bed in the main room.
The separate bedroom contains a King Bed which can unzipped into 2 Single Beds.
Additional Bedding: A Single Rollaway Bed may be added.

Bullet The Villa:
Quoting The Resort
“Rivalling the most coveted accommodations in the South Pacific, and throughout the world, The Villa at the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort redefines indoor and outdoor living. Experience a sumptuous ‘home away from home’, with a walled garden, private infinity pool, day bed pavilion, king bed suite with sunken bathroom and Jacuzzi, outdoor shower and so much more”.
The Villa is a work of art.  It comprises several Bure pavilions all linked by decks at various levels and features amazing private walled courtyards off both bedrooms and sweeping views from the private horizon swimming pool and lounging areas.

The Master Bedroom, which is breath-taking in its size and layout, is bordered on 2 sides by a walled courtyard which contains a waterfall, an outdoor shower and a private grassed area for private sun-bathing.  The internal bathroom which houses another shower, a spa bath and 2 separate vanities opens directly into the walled courtyard and the bedroom proper is raised 4 steps up from where the bathroom joins the bedroom.  A deck seamlessly joins the bedroom and this deck leads out to the Day Bed Bure on the same level.  The Day Bed Bure, which houses a King Day Bed, is a thatched bure which is open on the 2 sides where it joins the deck and the private swimming pool.

From the deck outside the main bedroom there are 4 steps down to a lower deck where you find a BBQ and an outdoor dining setting for 4.  A separate lounge bure complete with kitchenette and bathroom, runs directly off this lower deck.  The lounge bure converts to a second bedroom if required.
Children: Due to having an unfenced pool and unfenced decks over various levels, the resort will not automatically accommodate children aged under 6 years in The Villa.  However, we are happy to make representations to the resort if families with young children wish to stay in this accommodation type and are accepting of the possible risks to young children.
Maximum Occupancy: 5 guests (adults or adults and children)
Existing Bedding: 1 King Four-Poster Bed in the main bedroom and two fold-out Queen-size Sofa Beds in the lounge bure.
Additional Bedding:  No additional bedding accommodated
