Our Resort Report

OUR Thoughts on Club Raro Resort, Avarua outskirts, Rarotonga
This is an interesting option when contemplating a stay in Rarotonga.  Club Raro was one of the first resort properties built in Rarotonga, way back when tourism was in its infancy and beaches were not the main attraction here.  The original hotel (under a different name) was built as “town” accommodation so the accessibility to the town was its feature at that time and the lagoon, which it sits besides, was just something “out the back” and largely ignored.  The new Club Raro has grown and developed over the years adding new rooms and facilities and changing its predominantly commercial market to a more holiday-orientated place to stay.  Of course, it’s still handy to Avarua and that continues to be one of its main features, but, over recent times it has turned its focus towards its lagoon frontage and now, with the addition of the Ocean View Rooms, the Oceanview Pool Restaurant & Bar and the water-front “Sand Deck” with its access directly down to the lagoon, is a great place to base yourself for a high-value Rarotonga holiday.

Off Club Raro, the reef, which encircles the whole island, is very close to the land, so the lagoon is shallow and rocky and there is no beach as such.  When you descend the 20-or-so steps from the Sand Deck to the lagoon side you find predominantly coarse coral gravel, so don’t expect to be able to laze on a white sandy beach (you will need to travel a reasonably short distance around the coast to enjoy any of Rarotonga’s superb beaches).  What you will find though, is a beautiful romantic clear and shallow lagoon with the sea breaking not too far away.  In whale season, you can often see whales passing and playing right out front.

Club Raro rates itself at 3 Stars and that is a fair rating in our opinion.  On a recent visit, their new kitchen was in operation and they had employed a chef who was producing good food at acceptable prices.  Club Raro was always a great spot for a cool drink and it still is, with their daily “Happy Hour” deals between 4:00pm and 6:00pm every day.

The accommodation options are many and varied and there is something to suit every need from their good-standard Ocean View Rooms to their garden-located Standard Rooms, several of which have surprisingly well-equipped kitchenettes, and now, the new Tamure Garden Units and the 2 Bedroom Villas.

Choose Club Raro if you are looking for a good-value place to base yourself on Rarotonga, a place close enough to town to walk to its shops, cafés, bars, restaurants, sports grounds, clubs and market.  Take a bike, motorbike, rental car or the round-island bus the short distances to the eastern, southern and western beaches.

Your Accommodation Options
As you enter the reception lounge at Club Raro the Standard Rooms are in 2 ribbon blocks of 8 rooms on either side of the reception area.  The Standard Self-Contained Rooms are off to the right-hand side with the new Tamure Garden block beside.  Immediately behind Reception you find the Palms Restaurant & Bar and between the Palms Restaurant and the waterfront there is a nice courtyard which contains Club Raro’s swimming pool and swim-up bar.  The rooms opening on to the courtyard on either side are the Poolside Rooms. The two rooms at the waterfront end of each of these ribbon blocks are designated Ocean View Rooms and there is another ribbon block of 15 Ocean View Rooms which runs right along the lagoon frontage to the right of the Poolside Rooms. The block of 10 original Studio Apartments is located behind the Lagoonfront Rooms. All rooms, with the exception of the original Studio Apartments have a pleasant veranda/patio which is furnished with 2 outdoor chairs and an occasional table and defined from each other by a trellis divider.

Every room is air-conditioned as well as having a ceiling fan and all are either recently built or have been refurbished over recent years.  All are presented in light, bright colour schemes with a pleasant Cook Islands touch in their décor and are 24m2 to 30m2 in size.

All room rates at Club Raro include a standard tropical breakfast
An a la carte breakfast is available at additional cost.

There is no view as such from the Studio Apartments. There are limited numbers of interconnecting rooms.

Bullet Ocean View Rooms:
Apart from the Two Bedroom Apartments, Ocean View Rooms are the premium accommodation type at Club Raro.  Refurbished in 2015 and complete with new modern bathrooms, each has a beautiful view of the lagoon from the patio out front (and the passing whales in season). There is a path along the front of the rooms which is bordered outside the room by a slightly raised tropical garden and a row of coconut palms, on the other side of the path is the resort’s “Sand Deck” which is built above the sea shore. Should your budget allow, we recommend you treat yourself to an Ocean View Room; we believe the small additional price is good value for the location, the higher standard and the terrific outlook. Bathrooms have a shower and hairdryer. Each has tea/coffee making facilities and a fridge as well as iron and ironing board.

Existing Bedding: 1 Super King Bed or 2 Single Beds

However, as is the case with every coastal hotel in Rarotonga, the round-island bus passes regularly en route to and from the town and beaches.  Options to walking or taking the bus include; cycling, taking a motorised scooter/bike or rental car.

Electric Bicycles are available to hire via Our Specialists.  Rarotonga is ideal for battery-powered bicycles and we can pre-book these for you.  With pedal assistance, e-bicycles will go twice around the island on a single charge and batteries may be recharged using a standard power plug.
