Our Resort Report

OUR Thoughts on Henga Lodge, Henga Scenic Reserve, North Road, Chatham Island
With 23 rooms on offer and a fleet of six rental cars, Henga Lodge focuses on well-being and friendly service as well as providing a cultural experience to its guests.  The Lodge’s licensed restaurant “Kopi Kitchen” is well-known and respected for serving local cuisine including greens from their own garden and Blue Cod and Crayfish when in season.

Sustainability and Conservation are key philosophies behind the eco-conscious Henga Lodge. We are impressed with their offer for guests to offset their carbon footprint by purchasing the “Henga Welcome Pack” which provides a unique opportunity to purchase a tree native to Rekohu (the Moriori name for Chatham Islands) and have it planted in one of the Hokotehi reserves during the planting season as a way of giving back to the land and creating a special memory of your stay.  The welcome pack also includes a reusable stainless-steel drink bottle to use during your stay in addition to receiving a welcome drink on arrival and a locally made gift.

There are many places with historical and cultural significance to visit.  We recommend you include a tour of Kopinga Marae which features a cultural history talk, Nunuku’s Cave (rock carvings), and a visit to the JM Barker (Hapupu) Historic Reserve to see the Rakau Momori – living tree engravings on Kopi trees depicting Moriori Ancestors and symbols of the natural world such as patiki (flounder) and birds.

Many sites on the island are on private land and can only be visited with permission from the land-owner.  Permission can be gained with the assistance of the owner/managers of Henga Lodge, so that those guests wishing to free-wheel and visit the sights by rental vehicle may do so.  However, many sites are physically inaccessible to individuals, so Henga Lodge have teamed-up with local operator Kerry Fleming from Chatham Island Tours to ensure you can see the real Rēkohu during your stay with them.  Kerry’s 18-seater 4WD vehicle is a great way to get to locations on the Chathams that had previously been difficult to access.

There are many walks guests can take independently from Henga Lodge – some a little more demanding than others, but all worth the effort and the drinks and conversation in the bar in the late afternoon are even more enjoyable after a long walk in the fresh Chathams air.

This is a great location to base yourself for your Chathams holiday, the Lodge is clean, fresh and pleasant, the owner/managers are friendly and knowledgeable, but, best of all, the whole experience is one that will leave you satisfied and wishing you had spent more time on these remarkable islands.

Plan to come back in a few years to enjoy the place again and take the opportunity to check the progress of the tree that was planted from your first visit.

What Henga Lodge Say About Themselves

"Moriori Owned

Henga Lodge is owned and operated by Hokotehi Moriori Trust—the mandated tribal organisation of Moriori.

The aim is to promote awareness and preservation of Moriori culture. The majority of the staff are of Moriori descent and would be happy to share their knowledge and experiences.

There are a number of places to visit on the island of historical and cultural significance. These include Kōpinga Marae, rakau momori (tree carvings) Hapūpū and Rotorua, basalt columns, Nunuku's Cave, the Tame Horomona Rehe (Tommy Solomon) memorial statue at Manukau, Te Awapatiki, and the Moriori Ethnobotanical Gardens.

We encourage you to come and discover Moriori hospitality and peaceful culture.

To many, the Chathams is often thought of as that “bucket List” destination, bird-lovers, and many a fisherman’s dream. The islands’ geographical contrasts are extraordinary: rugged coastlines and towering cliffs, volcanic peaks, lagoons and peat bogs, sweeping beaches, isolated farms and patches of remnant native forest. It is a haven for rare and endangered birdlife, unique plant life and its surrounding waters are host to a bounty of thriving marine life.  You could say it’s paradise found.

The recently reopened Henga Lodge, owned and operated by Hokotehi Moriori Trust, is hoping to see an increase in Cultural tourism to the island.  Many visitors are now travelling to the island to stay at Henga Lodge and discover the islands rich history, uncovering the myths they once heard surrounding Moriori, the indigenous people of Rekohu (the Moriori name given to the island meaning “Misty Sun”).

Henga Lodge offers guests to Rekohu eco-conscious and comfortable accommodation with an insight into Moriori culture and cuisine.  We are excited to offer visitors to the island a real point of difference, along with personal service and affordable accommodation rates.

Come and visit the Real Rekohu for yourself.  You may never want to leave. ”
