Our Resort Report

OUR Thoughts on Ikurangi Eco Retreat, Titama Road, Matavera, Rarotonga
This place is pleasantly different, very special and a wonderful addition to the Rarotonga and Cook Islands Experience.  History tells us, that before modern times, the vast majority of Rarotongans lived inland on the very fertile coastal plain and foothills of the central mountains.  While there is no denying that the beaches and the coastal lifestyle are superb on Rarotonga, much of the local populace still reside between the coast road, the Ara Tapu and the ancient inland road, the Ara Metua, which is only around 800 metres inland in most places.  In this flat-to-gently-rising strip, local people live and tend their pawpaw plantations and gardens and raise vegetables, chickens and pigs for market.  Life along the inland Ara Metua is quiet and relaxed.  Ikurangi Eco Retreat has been built in this very area and captures the same quiet and relaxed atmosphere that surrounds the inland road.

Unlike the coastal resorts, Ikurangi’s accommodation units face inwards over the lawns, gardens and small plantations towards the central mountains of Rarotonga and Mt Ikurangi in particular. Compared to coastal Rarotonga, this is a different world, but still only 400 metres along a sealed road from the coast. It’s easy to access the Muri area with its many resorts, restaurants, cafés and the famous Muri Night Market is only 4kms away.  It’s equally easy to access Avarua Town 5kms away in the opposite direction from Muri.

The owner/managers at Ikurangi know exactly how to make their guests feel special in every way.  You won’t get a warmer welcome anywhere in the Cook Islands and they are well known for providing expert advice and assistance to help their guests get the most out of their stay. The all-new accommodation units, whether you choose the amazing, All accommodation units are very well maintained and no matter whether you choose the amazing “glamping-style” Luxury Safari Tents or the Tropical Are accommodation, a full range of services and facilities are offered to all guests.  Services and facilities include daily servicing, provision of a hair dryer, iron and ironing board and waffle bath robes, etc.  A truly memorable tropical breakfast is included in the nightly tariff and delivered to your unit each morning.  The property has a pleasant, newly resurfaced, chemical-free swimming pool (most times you will be the only person in or around the pool) and bicycles are available free of charge for guests to use. There is a dedicated Wifi hotspot.

New in 2020
The property has built a designated yoga platform and is working to make this an all-weather option for yoga groups.

You could easily spend an entire Rarotonga holiday based at Ikurangi Eco Retreat and have a totally fulfilling holiday, but, if a beach stay beckons you, we recommend you consider spending an additional few nights at Ikurangi to really round out your Cook Islands experience.

Minimum Stay Policy
There is a minimum 3 night stay policy at this property.

Your Accommodation Options
There are two different types of accommodation on offer at Ikurangi.  The Retreat is best known for its marvellous safari-tent experience, but, for those people seeking to enjoy this lovely private location in a more conventional room at a lesser tariff, Ikurangi has this covered too.

The Tropical Are Studios are conventional timber-constructed units.  Each has a nice spacious feel with a peaked ceiling, timber floor and good flow-through ventilation for cooling which is aided by a pedestal fan.  Bathrooms are internal and equipped with a single vanity, a shower and conventional toilet.

The Luxury Safari Tents are the perfect fit for an “eco retreat” – everything about them suggests sustainability.  Each Safari Tent is placed on a wooden platform which is raised up 5 or 6 steps off the ground in the front to allow air to flow through beneath.  Each Safari Tent has a separate sleeping area which can be closed off from the nice, big, tented veranda which comes complete with outdoor lounging furniture. The windows in the bedroom part of the tent may be open to the breeze or closed with insect screens and fabric flaps.  The Safari Tent bathrooms are very special.  The double vanity and the modern (eco) composting toilet are under cover and the shower (and bath in the case of the Ariki Unit) is set in a private walled courtyard off the internal part of the bathroom.

Tropical Are Studios are 30m2 in size and the Safari Tents have 20m2 of living space.  Safari Tents feel bigger because one of their many features is the way they seem to bring the outdoors in to combine indoor and outdoor living spaces.

All accommodation types come with tea/coffee-making facilities, a good-sized bar fridge and electricity points for charging phones etc.

Room Categories (In ascending order of tariff)
Bullet Tropical Are Studios:
The 3 Tropical Are Studios offer a more conventional style of accommodation at a lesser price than the Safari Tents.  The Studios also have a Day Bed/Divan in a semi-private position off to one side of the open-plan room.  When not being used for lazing and relaxing during the day, this divan is the ideal place to position open suitcases.

Additional Bedding: The Day Bed may be converted to an overnight bed on request.

Bullet Luxury Safari Tents:
The 3 Luxury Safari Tents open towards the central lawn. Guests enjoy the private ambience and relaxing atmosphere of safari tent living.  Bathrooms feature a courtyard shower.
Maximum Occupancy: 2 guests
Existing Bedding: 1 Super King Bed or 2 King Single Beds.

Existing Bedding: 1 Super King Bed or 2 King Single Beds.
Additional Bedding: No additional bedding accommodated

Getting to and from Ikurangi Eco Retreat
Your Travel Specialists will include airport transfers in package arrangements as required/agreed for stays at Ikurangi Eco Retreat.

Ikurangi Eco Retreat is located in Rarotonga’s Matavera district which is a very “helpful” location for enjoying a stay on Rarotonga. Matavera is a quiet “country” area of Rarotonga located on the north-west of the island almost half way between the main town (Avarua) and Muri Beach and Lagoon.  Ikurangi is approximately 400 metres off the main circle-island road – the Ara Tapu, up a sealed road and a similar distance inland to the ancient road of Rarotonga – the Ara Metua. It’s an easy walk down to the circle-island road where buses pass regularly towards Avarua and Muri Beach.  In Rarotonga, the buses stop anywhere they are hailed.

From Ikurangi, it is only 4kms to Muri in one direction and 5kms into town in the other direction.  The Retreat provides guests with complimentary use of bicycles and cycling is a great way to travel on Rarotonga.  Motor scooters are also a great way to get around this remarkable island and we are happy to pre-arrange scooter hire for you, or, if you prefer waiting until you arrive at Ikurangi, the staff there will be only too pleased to arrange scooter hire for you.  Electric Bicycles are available to hire via Our Specialists.  Rarotonga is ideal for battery-powered bicycles and we can pre-book these for you.  With pedal assistance, e-bicycles will go twice around the island on a single charge and batteries may be recharged using a standard power plug. Try something new in this friendly environment, after all, isn’t that what holidays are for!

Car rentals are also available – our recommendation, especially if you are planning to be in Rarotonga during the New Zealand winter months, is that you arrange your car rental through us well in advance of your scheduled arrival.

Kids Policy
Guests aged 12 years and over are welcome at Ikurangi Eco Retreat.

Check-in/Check Out
Hotel check-in and check-out times are:
Check-in: 2:00pm
Check-out: 10:00am
Early Arriving Flights
Some flights from Auckland arrive at Rarotonga between midnight and 3:00am. We recommend that all guests arriving prior to 6:00am should book and pay for their room from the night before to guarantee access to their room at the time they arrive. Not doing this could result in a wait of around 12 hours to gain entry to your accommodation.
Late Check-Out
Depending in whether accommodation is booked by arriving guests, a later check-out may be available but this is subject to confirmation on your day of departure.  Our Specialists are happy to arrange a day room facility at a hotel in the vicinity of the airport for those requiring a confirmed day room booking for a late departing flight.

Resort Cancellation Policy
Bullet All cancellations must be made in writing.
Bullet Cancellations outside 30 days prior to scheduled arrival do not incur cancellation fees.
Bullet Cancellations made within 30 days of scheduled arrival incur a cancellation fee equal to 100% of the cost of accommodation booked.
