CAPTAIN COOK CRUISES SAILING SAFARI Mamanuca Islands, (departing from Denarau) Fiji
"Cruise Fiji through the Yasawa Islands by tall ship on a 3 or 4 day Sailing Safari and experience a unique Fiji Islands adventure. “Spirit of the Pacific” is a 108ft topsail schooner which sets sail every Monday and Thursday from Denarau Marina Nadi for the Yasawa islands.
Experience a new adventure every day - snorkel, trek overland, visit islands and traditional villages, go fishing, laze on deck or gain a few tips on tall ship sailing. You may even be lucky enough to swim with Manta Rays. Each evening return to the Barefoot Lodge where sunset swims, volleyball, night fishing tours, star gazing, Fijian 'lovo' feasts and nightly entertainment are all part of the fun. All meals, activities and accommodation in traditional beachfront bures on Drawaqa Island are included in the price".
Our thoughts on Captain Cook Cruises Sailing Safari What a great experience! This cruise is best suited to the young and the young-at-heart of all ages. Cruise out of Port Denarau, past the Mamanuca Islands and into the Southern Yasawa Islands on a “real” sailing ship and provided there is wind around, you get to learn how to handle a big sailing ship and, if you will, help to work the ship under sail. It’s great fun!
There are two departures each week – one 3 days/2 nights departing Mondays and one 4 days/3 nights in duration departing Thursdays. Once you reach The Yasawa Islands, each day of the Sailing Safari is spent cruising off to another wonderfully unspoiled tropical island for swimming, snorkeling, maybe a visit to a remote Fiji Village community, beachcombing and exploring.
Each night is spent ashore at Barefoot Lodge on Drawaqa Island where accommodation is in natural, island-style Fijian Bures where dinner is provided and low-key Fijian entertainment is provided every night accompanied by the ever-present kava bowl. All Sailing Safari and the other travelers staying at the Lodge are welcome to join in around the kava bowl if they wish.
Barefoot Lodge is the epitome of an eco experience. The individual bures which are located right on the beachfront are built the local Fijian way with high ceilings for coolness. There are twin beds (which you are welcome to push together) and mosquito nets over the beds. Most don’t have lights, but you will be provided with a torch to see your way around in the dark. The bathrooms are communal and the showers are not heated (the water is fresh but not freezing!), but if hot showers are a must for you, pack a camping solar shower that heats water in the sun during the day. Flares are lit every night and are kept alight all night to light the way between the bures and the Lodge facilities.
The restaurant/bar/entertainment area is centrally located between 2 beautiful beaches known as “Sunrise” and “Sunset” Beaches and the bures are located on both these beaches.
All meals are included and the food provided is plentiful and hearty, much of it provided from the Lodge’s own vegetable garden.
All this might seem somewhat “basic and natural” and to an extent it is, but that’s what is being offered by the Sailing Safari experience. If wind-powered transportation, clean, environmentally low impact accommodation and pristine natural surroundings appeal to you for a holiday experience, this is the trip for you. What could be better than waking up each morning with the sun and the first thing you see from your bed is a scene of a beach and tropical palms with nothing to do except to look forward to another day of lazy cruising and making new friends?
