OUR Thoughts on Sunset Resort, Arorangi Beach, Rarotonga
Sunset Resort is an eco-friendly beachfront resort with 35 room rooms ideally situated on the sheltered side of the island, noted for its superb tropical sunsets. The resort offers a wide range of accommodation types and services for such a small property, for example, bathrobes in the Beachfront rooms, in-room safes, UV filtered drinking water, insect screening and air-conditioning in all units and a range of complimentary services and activities. Daily tropical breakfasts are included in the tariff and upgrades to cooked breakfasts are available at a reasonable price.
The “only young adults over 15 years” policy ensures Sunset Resort is generally a quiet and relaxing place to stay, so it’s ideal for honeymooners or if you’re simply looking for a laid back resort. For those guests looking for more action, the Edgewater Resort is only a short walk along the road (better still, a walk along the beach), where they have regular Island Nights etc. Enjoy a night out and then wander back along the beach in the moonlight to the Sunset Resort.
The beach and the lagoon at Sunset Resort are beautiful and, as you would expect at a place bearing the “Sunset” name, the sunsets can be spectacular – just grab a cocktail from one of the Resort’s bars and head down to the Beach Pergola to enjoy nature’s spectacular show.
One of the many features to like about Sunset Resort is its great location; right on Arorangi Beach for perfect relaxation and within easy walking distance of a whole range of services and facilities. The resort offers two swimming pools including an intimate poolside ‘Birdcage Bar’. The licensed restaurant ‘The Anchorage Restaurant & Bar’ is open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Your Accommodation Options
Reception at the Sunset Resort is centrally located in the Resort grounds. Between Reception and the round island road there are three two-storey blocks and a small block of single storey rooms which surround the main swimming pool on three sides. These buildings house the Poolside 2 Bedroom and the Poolside 1 Bedroom Suites and the majority of the Garden/Poolside Studios. The lovely, covered outdoor restaurant is straight ahead and between Reception and the beach is where you find the Beachfront 2 Bedroom Suite, the 7 Beachfront Studios and a block containing 4 more single storey Garden Studios. The second swimming pool is handily located to these rooms. All accommodation is air-conditioned. Please note the term “Studio” denotes an open-plan space combining living and sleeping areas.
Accessible Facilities
Pathways throughout the resort allow for guests to travel unencumbered from their room, to the restaurant, bar, reception and the beachfront. Two of the Poolside Two-Bedroom Suites are situated on the ground floor and are access friendly (wheelchair or limited mobility), with the main bathroom modified for wheelchair access.
2 x Poolside Garden Studios to become ‘Accessible’ Rooms
By mid 2024 the bathrooms of 2 x Poolside Garden Studios will be modified to become fully accessible rooms. Upon completion, the resort will have 2 x 2 Bedroom Poolside Suites and 2 x Poolside Garden Studios, all offering fully accessible facilities.
Room Categories (in ascending order of tariff)
Poolside/Garden Studios:
The majority accommodation category at Sunset Resort. The tropical garden at Sunset Resort is a magical place full of colourful plants and beautiful flowers. The ground floor Garden/Poolside Studios open directly to the gardens and the main pool is just a few steps away through the gardens. From the first floor Garden/Poolside Studios guests enjoy a pretty view over the gardens and the pool. All studios are a good size, modern, light and bright and include a kitchen which contains a fridge/freezer, a microwave oven and a 2 burner cook top. There is plenty of room for a small dining table and 2 chairs and 2 comfortable lounge chairs plus a coffee table. Each Studio has a private patio or balcony complete with outdoor furniture.
Minimum Stay Policy: 2 nights stay required.
Maximum Occupancy: 2 Adults
Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed or 2 Single Beds
Additional Bedding: No additional bedding is accommodated.
Poolside One Bedroom:
Enjoy the extra space. The 2 Poolside 1 Bedroom category offers a separate bedroom and living/dining area, but be quick, there are only 2 of these units at Sunset Resort and their tariff is only a few dollars more than the Poolside Studios, so they sell out quickly. The kitchen includes a fridge/freezer, microwave oven and 2-burner cook-top.
A minimum 3-night stay is required to book this room grade.
Maximum Occupancy: 3 Adults
Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed or 2 Single Beds
Additional Bedding: 1 single bed in the lounge to accommodate extra guest
Beachfront Studios:
Beachfront Studios are similar to the Garden/Poolside Studios in size and appointments. They also include a kitchen with fridge/freezer, microwave oven and 2-burner cook top. Where they differ is in their location which is in a row of ground-level blocks facing a beautiful lawn, the beach, the lagoon, the reef and the ocean beyond. The sunsets viewed from these rooms and their private covered patios can only be described as “spectacular”.
A minimum 3-night stay is required to book this room grade.
Maximum Occupancy: 2 Adults
Existing Bedding: 1 King Bed or 2 Single Beds
Additional Bedding: No additional bedding is accommodated
Poolside Two Bedroom Suite:
Ideal for 2 couples sharing or a family with teen/adult children, the 2 Bedroom Poolside suites provide 2 separate bedrooms as well as a sizeable living/dining area. There is one bathroom, but there is the added convenience of a second toilet in a separate room complete with hand basin. The kitchen includes a fridge/freezer, microwave oven and 2-burner cook-top.
A minimum 3-night stay is required to book this room grade.
Maximum Occupancy: 5 Adults
Existing Bedding: A King Bed in each bedroom either or both of which convert to 2 Single Beds.
Additional Bedding: 1 Single Bed in the lounge may be utilised for the 5th guest.
Beachfront Two Bedroom Suite:
There is only one Beachfront 2 Bedroom unit at Sunset Resort Rarotonga. This marvellous suite has the same features and facilities as the Poolside 2 Bedroom suites with the added advantage that it is located on the beach frontage and is only separated from the sand by a lovely expanse of lawn. Enjoy the sunsets from your patio and in the season, watch the migrating whales passing just outside the reef. Two separate bedrooms and 1½ bathrooms

Existing Bedding: 2 King Beds each of which converts to Single Beds if required.

Getting to and from Sunset Resort
Sunset Resort have a policy of meeting all international arriving guests at Rarotonga Airport and providing transfers to and from The Resort. There is a charge for this service and we will include this in package arrangements as appropriate.
This property is quite handily located to the Airport and Avarua Town. The Yellow circle island buses run hourly during the day and take only 8 minutes to town, via the Golf Club, Airport and Market. The return journey stops at a couple of extra stops and takes 14 minutes.
Due to the proximity to town Sunset Resort is a great location from which to venture out on foot, by bicycle, battery-powered eco bike or motor scooter.
Complimentary Transfers to Markets & Church
On Saturday the Resort runs a free market Transfer between 8:30 am and 9am – catch a ride to the market and return at your leisure catch a local bus back to the Resort.
On Sunday the Resort offers a return transfer to the Arorangi Cook Islands Christian Church or St Mary’s Catholic Church - hear the beautiful sounds of local singing and a display of church hats.
Kids’ Policy
Sunset Resort Rarotonga is an Adults-Only Resort. Sunset Resort welcomes guests who are aged 15 years and over. Proof of age for guests aged 15 years may be requested.
Check-in/Check Out
Standard check-in and check-out times are as follows:
Check In Time: 12:00noon
Check Out Time: 10:00am
Early Check-in and Late Check-out
Early check-in between 6:00am and Noon may be available on application at 50% of your accommodation nightly cost. Early check-in may be requested but can only be confirmed at time of check-in.
Early check-in prior to 6:00am is at the cost of an extra night’s accommodation.
Late check-out between 10:00am and 6:00pm may be available on application at 50% of your accommodation nightly cost.
Late check-out after 6:00pm is at the cost of an extra night’s accommodation.
Early Arriving Flights
It is recommended that all guests arriving prior to 6:00am should consider booking and paying for their room from the night before to guarantee access to their room at the time they arrive. Not doing this could result in a wait of around 12 hours to gain entry to your accommodation.
