"Sunset Resort is idyllically situated on the sheltered western side of the island only minutes from Avarua township. The secluded beachfront location provides guests with an unspoilt view of Rarotonga’s crystal clear aqua blue lagoon and breathtaking sunsets.

The Resort offers 35 spacious rooms situated either on the beachfront over-looking the lagoon or beside either of our two swimming pools set amid lush tropical gardens. A wide variety of room types allow us to accommodate the needs of singles, couples, families or groups. However we do have a policy of no children under 12 years of age.

The luxury accommodation and lush gardens are only a taste of what the resort will offer. Dine at our open-air restaurant 'The Anchorage' open for breakfast, lunch and dinner or enjoy Happy Hour cocktails at our poolside bar 'Drumbeat'. Relax on the beautiful white sandy beach overlooking the lagoon or swim and snorkel amongst the colourful fish over the coral reef. What better way to end a sunny island day than to enjoy a cocktail on the beach watching the sun set over the lagoon. Sunset Resort has all the conveniences and features needed for a relaxing escape within friendly, intimate surroundings.

Avarua township is only an 8 minute drive away, the airport and golf course are situated 5 minutes away, as are a number of the island’s best restaurants.

Our Thoughts on Sunset Resort
Sunset Resort self-rates at 3.5 stars, but in the Cook Islands context, we think it could be rated a little higher.  With only 35 units, they offer a wide range of accommodation types and services for such a small property, for example, bathrobes in the Beachfront Studios and the Beachfront Suite, in-room safes, a restaurant which is open for all meals, air-conditioning in all units and a range of complimentary services and activities. Tropical breakfasts are included in the tariff and upgrades to cooked breakfasts are available at a reasonable price.

We particularly like the personal meet and greet and airport transfers.  As many of the flight arrival times in Rarotonga are either late at night or very early in the morning, being greeted by a person from the place you are staying at and having that same person check you in, is very welcome indeed at that time of night.

The “no kids under 12 years of age” policy ensures Sunset Resort is generally a quiet and relaxing place to stay, so it’s ideal for honeymooners and a great spot for weddings too.  For those guests looking for more action, the Edgewater Resort is only a short walk along the road (better still, a walk along the beach), where they have regular Island Nights etc. Enjoy a night out and then wander back along the beach in the moonlight to the Sunset Resort.

The beach and the lagoon at Sunset Resort are beautiful and as you would expect, at a place bearing the “Sunset” name, the sunsets can be spectacular – just grab a cocktail from the Resort’s Bar and head down to the Beach Pergola to enjoy nature’s spectacular show

Your Accommodation Options
Reception at the Sunset Resort is centrally located in the Resort grounds.  Between Reception and the round island road (Ara Tapu) there are three two-storey blocks and a small block of single storey rooms which surround the main swimming pool on three sides.  These buildings house the Poolside 2 Bedroom and the Poolside 1 Bedroom Suites and the majority of the Garden/Poolside Studios. The lovely, covered outdoor restaurant is straight ahead and between Reception and the beach is where you find the Beachfront 2 Bedroom Suite, the 7 Beachfront Studios and a block containing 4 more single storey Garden Studios. The second swimming pool is handily located to these rooms. All accommodation is air-conditioned. Please note the term “Studio” denotes an open-plan space combining living and sleeping areas.

 Garden & Poolside Studios
The Tropical Gardens at Sunset Resort are magical places full of colourful plants and beautiful flowers.  The ground floor Garden/Poolside Studios open directly to these gardens and the main pool is just a few steps away through the gardens. From the first floor Garden/Poolside Studios guests enjoy a pretty view over the gardens and the pool.  All studios are a good size, modern, light and bright and include a kitchen which contains a fridge/freezer, a microwave oven and a 2 burner cook top. There is plenty of room for a small dining table and 2 chairs and 2 comfortable lounge chairs plus a coffee table. Each Studio has a private patio or balcony complete with outdoor furniture.

Existing Bedding Configuration: 1 King or 2 Single Beds

 Beachfront Studio
Beachfront Studios are similar to the Garden/Poolside Studios in size and appointments. They also include a kitchen with fridge/freezer, microwave oven and 2 burner cook top.  Where they differ is in their location which is in a row of 2 single storey blocks facing a beautiful lawn and the beach, the lagoon, the reef and the ocean beyond.  The sunsets viewed from these rooms and their private covered patios can only be described as spectacular. A minimum 3 night stay is required in this room grade.

Existing Bedding Configuration: 1 King or 2 Single Beds

 Poolside One Bedroom Suite
Enjoy the extra space.  Poolside 1 Bedroom Suites offer a separate bedroom and living/dining area but be quick, there are only 2 of these suites at Sunset Resort and their tariff is only a few dollars more than the Poolside Studios, so they sell out quickly. The kitchen includes a fridge/freezer, microwave oven and 2 burner cook-top. A minimum 3 night stay is required in this room grade.

Existing Bedding Configuration: 1 King or 2 Single Beds
Additional Bedding: 1 Sofa Bed in the lounge

 Poolside Two Bedroom Suite
Ideal for 2 couples sharing or a family with teen/adult children, the 2 Bedroom Poolside Suites provide 2 separate bedrooms as well as a sizeable living/dining area.  There is one bathroom, but there is the added convenience of 2 toilets, one of which is in the bathroom and one is in a separate room complete with hand basin.  The kitchen includes a fridge/freezer, microwave oven and 2 burner cook-top. A minimum 3 night stay is required in this room grade.
Maximum Occupancy: 5 Adults
Existing Bedding Configuration: 2 Kings or 4 Single Beds
Additional Bedding: 1 Sofa Bed in the lounge

 Beachfront Two Bedroom Suite
There is only 1 Beachfront 2 Bedroom Suite at Sunset Resort Rarotonga.  This marvellous unit has the same features and facilities as the Poolside 2 Bedroom Suites with the added advantage that it is located on the beach frontage and is only separated from the sand by a lovely expanse of lawn.  Enjoy the sunsets from your patio and in the season, watch the migrating whales passing just outside the reef. A minimum 3 night stay is required in this room grade.

Existing Bedding Configuration: 2 Kings or 4 Single Beds
Additional Bedding: 1 Sofa Bed in the lounge

Getting to and from Sunset Resort
We will provide a coach or private car arrival/departure transfer from/to Rarotonga International Airport to Sunset Resort.

Kids Policy
Children aged 12 years and under are not accepted at the resort, unless the whole resort is booked.

Check-in/Check Out
The hotel will make every effort to ensure your rooms are available at your time of check-in; however, the Hotel standard times and rates are as follows:
Check In Time: 12.00pm
Check Out Time: 10.00am

Cancellation Policy
 All cancellations must be made in writing.
 If cancellations are effected between 30 - 7 days of scheduled arrival, a cancellation fee equal to one night’s accommodation will be levied.
 If cancellations are effected within 7 days of scheduled arrival including no shows, a cancellation fee equal to 100% of total stay will be levied.
